A lesson on faith
As I sat in the movie theater watching Exorcist III I thought to myself, "o.k. here, we go again. The same old movie plot, a priest who lost his faith." However, as I sat through the movie I realized that this movie had a twist, after all.
Although the movie is fiction, many of us face all types of demons (alcohol, drugs, lust, deceit, fornication, etc.) on a daily basis. Our heads may not rotate in a full 360, nor do we climb walls like spiders, but our demons are just as perplexing, scary, and burdomesome. Often causing the same response: hopelessness, confusion, bitterness, and defeat.
The main character in Exorcist III, a former priest was overwhelmed with these and other emotions that turned him against God. Yet, in the face of the darkest enemy he realized that the only true solution was to turn to the Almighty. As I sat in the movie theater watching the scenes unfold, I starting getting goose bumps. I mean I thought I was just coming to see a movie to kill some time until my train arrived. Who would have guessed that this movie would minister to my heart about my own faith.
As each scene unfolded, I began to think about my own demons. I wondered about my own faith. Would God say to me, "Oh, ye of little faith..."
As I watched the main character muster the courage to confess and repent his sins to God in order to be in position to do God's work, I began thinking about my own situation and in that movie theater watching Exorcist III I began thinking that I, too, should ask God for forgiveness of all my sins. And although I do this regularly as I am a professed Christian on this day my actions left me with a sense of peace and a lingering question in my mind. "I wonder if that director was a Christian?"
