Europe is an incredible place to visit and an even better place to travel around. There is such variety in Europe’s people, places and cultures that every corner you turn will probably show you something new. But, while you’re off on your life changing trip, there are some things you should probably consider. Here are some things to think about before and during your European travels:
Things to consider whilst travelling Europe
Europe is an incredible place to visit and an even better place to travel around. There is such variety in Europe’s people, places and cultures that every corner you turn will probably show you something new. But, while you’re off on your life changing trip, there are some things you should probably consider. Here are some things to think about before and during your European travels:
Download Helpful Apps
There is an app for almost everything these days, so don’t neglect to get the ones that are going to make your travels a lot easier. This includes the obvious apps like Google Maps and Google translate, but this also includes the more obscure apps that can help you out of a jam, like Tripit or XE Currency. Stock up on apps before you go and keep your phone somewhere safe so you can use them when you need them.
Cables, plugs and other electronics
If you’re travelling around Europe you’re bound to encounter a plug socket that most certainly does not match your plug. Did you come prepared, or did you do what many of us do and forget to bring an adaptor? Remember to pack enough adaptors and if you have a lot of gadgets that need charging, a power strip will certainly come in handy. If you don’t mind parting with a little bit more money, you can buy a multi-country adaptor that has multiple sockets on it for you to pug everything in.
Get a phone plan for using it abroad
The last thing you want to do after getting back from a long trip is face a massive phone bill. Calls abroad and roaming charges can be staggeringly extortionate if you’re not careful. So, check the policy of your phone plan and contact your provider to discuss your options.
Keep your cash safe
Thieves and pickpockets can hit you when you least expect it, so make sure you’re prepared. Rather than keeping credit cards in your wallet, take out cash when you need it and distribute it around your person. Keep a few notes in different pockets and in different bags to make sure that if you do get pickpocketed you’ll still have money left over. If you’re in a particularly dangerous area, you might want to carry a dummy wallet with a few small notes in it to get rid of muggers without giving up all of your savings.
Be prepared for emergencies
Medical emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, so take precautions. Before going to a location find out the number for the emergency services and research the medical facilities and services around your accommodation. If you live in Europe you’re eligible for European health insurance while you’re travelling. You can get an EHIC card for free from the official EHIC government website or, if you already have one, you can renew it at ehiccardrenewal.com. It’s also handy to pack a basic medical kit in with your luggage to be extra careful.
Bring Snacks
If you’re going to be travelling for a while or have a particularly tiring journey ahead, make sure you bring enough snacks to keep you energised. When you don’t eat for long periods of time your metabolism slows down, your energy dips and you might end up spending more than you would like on a meal later on if you can’t find any food options. Make your health a priority. For your own sake, stay hydrated and well fed during your travels.
