With each new year we embrace the fact that it is time for a fresh start and the chance to wipe the slate clean in order to look ahead at what the following year could bring. So far 2017 has not been dull in the slightest. Politically the world is shifting and evolving at a rate that makes it difficult for many people to keep up and there are massive developments when it comes to how we as a world are choosing to live our lives. Take a look at some of the biggest and most prominent news stories to have occurred in the last month and a half that are sure to just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to making the year 2017 go down in history.
Donald Trump becomes president
Earlier in January 2017 TV personality and businessman Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, much to many people’s disbelief. It has been less than 100 days since he first began working in the White House and to say that his presidency has been turbulent is an understatement. From the ‘Muslim Travel Ban’ to the scandal that is still being investigated around Russian involvement in his election, Trump has caused a lot of controversy and this trend is likely to continue. Watch this space (or hide away for the next 4 years…?).
Women’s March
In response to Donald Trump’s comments about women and minority groups throughout his election, a world-wide Women’s March took place on the 21st January in protest. The peaceful marches caught the attention of the world and were an impressive spectacle to behold. Many celebrities came along to boost coverage and helped to make women’s voices from around the world heard.
Riots in Romania
Unrest ensued in Romania after the Romanian government proposed the pardoning of certain crimes committed by Government officials. More than 25,000 people protested the bill being passed on the night it was announced and this number grew to 300,000 the following day. These protests helped to withdraw the bill, yet this is still required to be approved.
Italy Avalanche
Following an Earthquake in Italy, 30 people went missing at a hotel in a s ki resort in Abruzzo in January. The avalanche covered the resort in 5 metres of snow survivors were still being found days after the devastating situation occurred.
