Dear Wignesan,

My sincere thanks for all the work you put into the preliminary organization and the actual day-to-day coordinations of the actual lectures and readings; not to mention your stirling [sterling ? ] efforts to introduce the sessions. Through this, the event turned out, at least for me, a major time of my life, a kind of accolade - entirely unexpected and therefore all the more moving. I just hope it did not disappoint you, and that you feel that your time and energy were at least partly rewarded. And also, that the various untoward transport, payment and staff irritations did not get you down, too much.

Let me add, too, the memorable Tamil meal - the only gastronomic event of the visit, as it turned out. As I drink my bottle of St. Emilion, I will recall your friend's kindness. [A highly frequented Tamil restaurant, run by two Sri Lankan brothers, at a time when other notable chain-Indian caterers had hardly established themselves in the capital - for those of a moderate purse.]

Please tell your son that I very much appreciated his accompanying me in a memorable visit to the Musée d'Orsay, and his good conversation during the day. My best wishes for his studies and his film work.

Finally, I risk enclosing the remains of my francs, which you must accept without fuss. This is simply a gesture towards the finances. I'll send more loot as the cassettes and the films and so on arrive.

I have told people here of your efforts along these lines and they are fairly agog to hear and see.
