The one hope I had held, would be that the Women's Liberation Movement could open us up to the idea that we all possess our individual strengths and weaknesses, and… that we would learn to somehow cherish them.
I am beginning to believe true friendship between women is an oxymoron. We shake our metaphorical dicks at each other as vigorously as any male. A strong, multi-talented woman is often characterized by her "sisters" as being a bitch, controlling, power hungry and other not so nice phrases.
Or, a woman may complain she feels "threatened" by another's talent, or feels "inadequate". Jesus Christ! When will this bullshit ever end? How sad is this? The one hope I had held, would be that the Women's Liberation Movement could open us up to the idea that we all possess our individual strengths and weaknesses, and… that we would learn to somehow cherish them. What a freaking joke!
All my life I've endured a constant stream of this juvenile narcissistic penis envy. It wasn't "fair" I was born wealthy. It wasn't fair I am intelligent. It isn't easy being around someone who can "cope" with things, or write well, or write quickly, or I guess draw a breath. I would ask, is it fair or just to constantly attach emotional insecurities and inadequacies on others? No, it's not. Friends I've had for well over 20 years have all experienced this same phenomenon.
Why? It is very easy to project ones own lack of character or moral development on other people or things. Historically, the weak have always despised the strong, even when most reliant on that strength. It is convenient to rationalize someone else's talent or success by "assuming" they have been given something to help them "up" Like having money or sleeping with the "boss" We are a cruel and treacherous sex. We out manipulate, out connive, outtright cheat each other with ease, without even breaking a sweat.
A friend of mine, who works for a Fortune 500 company, was driven almost to the brink of resignation, by a group of her "sisters". Why? Because they could. That's right, because they could. There was no real motive for the nasty notes, dented fenders, damaged work product. This woman, in fact had helped many of these women with projects, allowing them full credit, though she had done much of the work. She had also been fully responsible for two of the women being promoted to much higher paying positions. She gives her all to everything she does, yet is hated for it.
When are we going to learn to truly be supportive of each other? How difficult is it to hold yourself accountable for your own shortcomings, and stop blaming it on some mysterious lack of parity? This country has a very negative attitude towards competence and success, particularly among women. That glass ceiling will never be shattered as long as we are our own worst enemies.
