The third and final presidential debate took place last night, Monday, October 22nd. Both candidates came with clearly well defined strategies. President Obama’s strategy was to attack from the beginning and keep pressure on Governor Romney. Governor Romney’s strategy, however, was to be more on the defensive rather than on the offensive. His tactic was to control his spoken words as well as his body language. He wanted to keep his base feeling proud of him and at the same time try to help undecided voters decide to vote for him. Something that is not easy to do because these two groups do not stand on the same platform. Neither do they operate using the same principles. Strategically, unlike the first presidential debate, President Obama came prepared. This time around, it seemed as if Governor Romney chose to play it safe. He moved more to the middle rather than be himself. In the process, he embraced more than what he intended to embrace. The President on the other hand, seemed to be the more comfortable of the two candidates.
Going back to our three-game series of the NBA Finals analogy, it was clear that the reigning MVP and World Champion came determined to take the series, and, hopefully the championship. As a matter of fact, according to the CNN scientific poll, the President won the debate 48%–40% (http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/pollingcenter/polls/3287). This means that the reigning MVP and World Champion won the series because he won two games. But does it mean that he won the title? Not yet.
You see, unlike the normal NBA Finals, these finals are more like the NBA Finals meet Dancing With The Stars (DWTS). Though the reigning MVP and World Champion won two contests, he did so by small margins both times. The challenger, however, won the first debate by a big margin. Will this make any difference?
According to the panel of judges, the first debate went to the challenger, but the second and third debates went to the reigning MVP and World Champion. Again, this does not mean that the reigning MVP and World Champion has automatically won the title. If it was the NBA, he would have won the title. But, since it is a mixture of NBA and DWTS, the population will have the chance to vote and decide who the winner is.
