This book is not only for children but will give adults a thought provoking read.

Is this the future of genetic engineering?

The year is 2070, and humans are no longer highest on the food chain. A new race dominates the world: the Rathings, mutants who are half rat and half human. These are the supreme leaders on our planet; humans are merely allowed to exist some have even been enslaved by the Rathings. However, the Magars, a race of half human and half bird, are waiting in the wings, keeping the power of the Rathings at bay, and causing them trouble along the way.

Jack, Ashok, Bill, and Jimmy are human children who have not known any other world but this one. These four friends decide to explore a cave that leads them to Rumrunner Cove, a Rathing outpost that is off-limits to humans. Although they know that they have been foolish, nothing can prepare them for what lies ahead. This is where the adventure begins.

The Kytos Project is the debut novel by John von Kesmark and the first book in The Rathing Chronicles series. Although it may be a children’s book, it does not patronize adult readers in anyway. What began as an impulsive dare among four boys becomes the story of how these boys save the world from a genetic engineering project gone wrong.

This book also presents in some interesting theories. Spinetinglers have read many articles on how genetic engineering will stop children from being born with hereditary diseases such as Spinal Bifida. According to this book, genetic engineering has not managed to rid the world of these problems; it has only produced mutant races that the world could have lived without. This is a very interesting concept that I am sure will be elaborated on in future editions of The Rathing Chronicles.
