You're very wrong on the looting aspect of it all. In fact , most of the bodies have been those of firefighters because their Bunker Gear seemed to survive the ordeal. There were a couple of cases of thieves dressed as construction workers breaking into a jewelry store to steal upscale watches and they were caught. Another group tunneled into a CitiBank's vault that bordered on the northern portion of the site. /// Some have charged that the issue for both cops and firemen is OT, but the conditions down their suck. Our firehouse has had to supply three guys so far and its always fallen to the junior man because no one wants the 12 hours on 24 hours off schedule. The Police and Fire Departments are two very different jobs and they often clash, but as many things as there are that I don't like about a lot of cops, looting bodies isn't something I'd accuse them off. Over the summer, my company was pulling ceilings after a fire and found money packed inside the bedroom ceiling. It'd probably been there for years. The two guys pulling that ceiling handed it ($38,000) over to the the Battalion Chief who then handed it over to a Police Lieutenant. I know it's been vouched into Police impound. If no one claims it within 90 days or something that money reverts to the state's coffers. /// As far as the Afghan strategy goes, the U.S. considers the Al Qaeda and the Taliban their enemy...not the Afghan people. They're fighting this group the way they once fought the Barbary pirates. As one of our old military leaders once said, "We have no permanent friends, we have no permanent foes...only permanent interests."

Dear Trask;

I don't believe there is any "looting" (there ain't much to loot, anyway... finding the melted remains of a gold Rolex is "not bloody likely"). The REST of your points, however, make sense. As for "how to handle the situation in Afghanistan"... special warfare personnel have long held a universal motto: "KILL 'EM ALL AND LET GOD SORT 'EM OUT". This philosophy might sit well with you...

The whole thought of people stooping to this pathetic level turns my stomach, but after having the best of friends rip you off only proves how easy it would be to steal from a complete stranger. I'm sure that the majority of the people out in the pile of rubble wouldn't think of resorting to this sort of thing, but the truth is that quite f few people would steal something if they had a chance. In regards to humanitarian aid "rations" being dropped, only to be stolen by the Taliban & then sold back to the hungry, it was bound to happen. These fundamentalist extremists beat their women & kill there own people, so I am not surprised. At least some of the food is getting to the people who need it & I guess that is better than none. The problem will hopefully be taken care of in the near future. At least myself, and most "true" Americans hope so.
