CALIFORNIA – A young girl grows up with pain and hardship in an impoverished nation, but creatively overcomes her obstacles in Lili Dauphin’s new book, Crying Mountain: Crazy Hurricane.
Tilou is a young girl raised in the small village of Tiville, Haiti. When she is only 4 months old, her mother travels overseas hoping to make money to give her daughter a better life. Instead, the young child is met with pain and disappointments at the hands of those entrusted to care for her.
Tilou is left all alone to fend for herself in an environment full of superstition, hunger and violence where most children die before the age of 5 from malnutrition. In order to survive, Tilou is forced to devise a special way of living to help her deal with the pain of her daily life.

Tilou creatively turns her obstacle into opportunities. She follows other kids to school beginning when she is barely two years old so that she can learn to read. After she learns how to write at the age of 5, she keeps a diary of her daily pains and tribulations. Tilou commits to paper a stream of memories and feelings about the extreme poverty, superstition and brutality that surround her in her stricken native land.
Tilou’s ways of dealing with life in the village do not sit well with the people around her. The resent her for being different, and Tilou encounters much abuse and hostility. Despite the villagers’ contempt, however, Tilou vows not to change.
When a devastating hurricane nearly wipes out Tiville, the village must rely on Tilou’s determination and wisdom to stay alive and recover from the destruction. The villagers begin to realize that Tilou was their salvation during the hurricane, but will they come to appreciate Tilou’s gifts or simply return to the previous hostility and abuse?
