“Restavek” is a Haitian Creole word that derived from the French words “reste avec” which means stay with. A restavek is usually a poor child who lives with family members or strangers in exchange for food and a place to sleep. Their own biological parents are typically not able to provide for them financially. This is the simple definition of a restavek.
To be frank, in Haiti, a restavek is a child slave and is owned by someone who takes great advantage of his/her vulnerability. Most restaveks are not allowed to go to school and work very long hours for those who often abuse them emotionally, physically and sometimes sexually. There are no programs available to protect these poor kids from their brutal fate. My book “I will Fly Again: The restavek” clearly depicts the dark side of child slavery.
