Forgiveness is an essential quality of godly character. It is an aspect of keeping covenant with God. Jesus commands us to sow forgiveness in believers who offend us. Look at it simply as giving those who offend us to God and Caesar rather than playing God by judging and taking revenge. Sowing forgiveness in others results in a greater harvest of forgiveness along our own path of sanctification.  Matthew 6:15
 

 When a believing sister or brother wrongs you, obey Jesus. Matthew 18:15-17.     
 

15. “If your brother wrongs you, go and show him his fault, between you and him privately. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.”  Confront in Love, one on one.
 

16. “But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two others, so that every word may be confirmed and upheld by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” 'Be sure he understands that you are in covenant with God and your enemies are God’s enemies.   Establish the facts through witnesses and cross-examination.
 

17. “If he pays no attention to them, [refusing to listen and obey] tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a pagan and a tax collector.” Church is the family of Spirit filled believers to whom you and the offender are accountable. If the offender will not listen to God through His church, then take it to appropriate civil or criminal authorities as a believer who is rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. That is how you “let him be to you as a pagan and a tax collector.”  Release the unrepentant to authority for reproof and Justice.
 

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:1  Forbear to judge and condemn your offender [FOR]. Then [GIVE] him to appropriate authorities that he may correct his walk. “You shall not hate your brother in your heart; but you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him.” Leviticus 19:17  You do this with kingdom timing which is patient but punctual. That is, cut them some slack because “God is not finished with them yet.” Stay attentive to the Holy Spirit and watch what God does in your offender's life and how He changes you to be more like Jesus. “The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgement:”  I Corinthians 2:15  Do not stand in the way of God’s reproof or vengeance in the life of your offender.
 

All authority is God’s through those He appoints. Romans 13:1-4  In America you can intercede and help God to appoint your government authorities. Primary authority is parents and those to whom they delegate authority. Local, state and federal government and appointed law enforcement agents are the civil and criminal authorities. The military and police may use lethal force to defend you. You also may bear arms and use lethal force for self defense.
 

You are in covenant with God. His Spirit indwells your spirit. So you are the aroma of Christ to everyone. That smells like life to believers but death to those who are perishing so Jesus offends those who are perishing.
