Remember that old movie, Independence Day? From time to time I think that what the world needs is an aggressive intergalactic alien invasion to pull us together. Would we be able to set aside our differences in order to unite our strengths, energies, and resources to fight a common, apocalyptic foe?
Some would say we almost succeeded with the COVID epidemic. For months we faced a common, global foe. While there were those who chose to focus solely on the inconveniences to themselves and then rebel against directives intended to limit the pandemic, many more did what they could to prevent the spread of the virus. Arguments still rage as to the efficacy of some of the tools of those efforts (I.E. masks) but there can be little doubt others were successful. And it wasn't just humans that benefited. Recall the images of how nature was reasserting herself. How the air cleared over China and how animals were once again roaming peacefully along city streets. How the earth was turning green and blue again.
Now imagine what could happen if we were to set aside all those things that separate us and focus on those that unite us. Those earthly issues we must all deal with. That have the ultimate power to benefit or destroy us all. Would third world countries then have enough clean water to drink and food to eat? Would there be enough shelter for everyone who wanted and needed it? Would there be medical care available regardless of where one lived or what their economic situation was? Would children once again be able to play safely in their own neighborhoods because, as someone once said, it takes an entire village to raise a child? Would the world once again turn green and blue?
Idealistic musings? Perhaps. But didn't we almost get it right...once?
While the US has better data collection leading to more reported cases, our death rate per million was much lower than many other countries. But more than many, as well.
Coincidentally, my latest novel, Starting Over: The Village of Los Angeles has a pandemic that kills 90% of the people on the Earth with another 5% dying from the lack of clean water, food and supporting society, like healthcare. The resulting reversal of climate change and people pulling together results in a positive outcome for the whole world.
For the reasons I describe in this book, the world-wide suffering, death and extinction of humanity is very likely to occur, unless nonviolent and democratically determined radical and revolutionary personal and societal actions and changes are taken
