Vietnam / Flash Fiction / Blogging

The camouflage painted plane bulked huge and sat heavily in the hot sun. Every swinging dick in our column picked up his gear and started for the plane while the troops who had just disembarked headed toward us. We were all dressed in short sleeve khaki uniforms and the heat shimmered up from the concrete as the two columns past each other.

"We kept all the beds warm for all you motherfuckers back home in the States!"

"We'll do the same for you!"

"Victor Charlie here we come!"

"Don't get your balls shot off!"

"It'll all be over with in ten days. We guarantee it!"

I was nineteen years old and I was going to live.

what a closing line. great write. could u recommend a good Nam book?

Yes, that was the bravado the soldier encountered over there, but under the words, always, was in the undertones the whisper a macho man can't say aloud..."take care..."
Because, against all odds, draftees and pros were all brothers, and brothers take care of each other.
Casualties was a word only for the papers, casualties for the soldiers were pieces of his heart.
A little piece of history this one is.
