A satirical view of human nature at all levels

I need to discuss an issue that I have been mulling over. I just purchased a book entitled
PARADOXICAL STRATEGIES IN PSYCHOTHERAPY By Leon F. Seltzer.
Why did I buy the book? Simply this. I read an article in Psychology Today which by the way is on my hit list of one of the most sanctimonies, pandering to the elite PHD squad who paradoxically have bigger problem with low self esteem than those who they are supposed to be helping. If you were to remove all the lengthy references to the complete, first, middle and last names Then their title and what Ivy league university they attended you would find two things. One the article would be about ¼ of the original length. Secondly the advice would have no more credibility than say a priest or religious figure or perhaps your grandmother. Having said that Dr. Leon F. Seltzer wrote an article in the above mentioned magazine that I honestly felt was well written and had real substance. After reading it I felt I really learned something. So I found his website and the book was on there. I was curious to see what other things I could learn.
In reading his book I started to realize that since the time of Freud down to our day that most patients want to get well but ironically fight the therapist. And the obvious reason becomes apparent in that we or should I say, I, since I can only speak for myself. That

I fear the perceived power emanating from the dragons mouth that has been born in the high temple of academia. This dragon has a name. I know it's name but I will leave for you to figure it out. A simple fact is people do not like to be controlled. Especially if the control seems overt.
In short the secret relies upon people not being aware that they are being controlled Given the preponderance of overworked, underpaid stressed out people who fear just about everything form clowns to independent thinking, this is not a monumental feat. All you really need to do is to create the illusion of choice. This is always a win loose situation that given this choice most people will pick the one that lacks the most logic. Like politics. There are two political ideologies in this country giving us the false notion of choice. The proof is that no mater who ends up in office, for the most part, if you look at it historically and objectively, there has always been a certain focal agendas that we the people have not succeeded in figuring out yet. In fact the power mongers of today rely completely on this notion.
So the issue is one of control. It always has been and always will be. To begin with I do not see a problem, as a patient, to not want to feel controlled whether it is perception or reality or a bit of both.
Struggle is healthy. Evolution is based on the struggle not only to survive but to be better. I have to wonder if having low self is really so bad. People with low self esteem struggle more to compete with themselves and others. Low self esteem is one of the biggest paradoxes of human nature because the very people we see as having the greatest confidence are the people who are in a never ending cycle to prove to others what they are really trying to prove to themselves. Think about it, if you like the way you are where is the motivation to grow? Another paradox I find in psychotherapy is that those being treated have developed great coping skills, in a world that has not.
You see I have come to the conclusion that mental illness is all chemical based. I have also come to the conclusion that the term mental illness is completely deceptive and highly subjective. All the things we learn in group should be taught in school on all levels. If it were taught starting at an early age this world would be a kinder gentler world. I cannot over emphasize this enough, because it is for this very reason that the term mental illness is such a convoluted term, that the public is afraid of us. Yes people who are murderers are mentally ill. They do not seek professional help because they think they do not need it.
The striking reality that people do not want to face, is that the majority of the mentally ill are not in treatment but are out there working. Time bombs waiting to go off. Because the term mentally ill refers only to people who can no longer cope and are forced to get help, the world has a convoluted understanding towards mental health in general. Mental health has nothing to do with being disabled. That is a separate issue. This is where my frustration lies. Because the term is so misused, it becomes erroneous logic to assume that because I am intelligent I cannot be disabled and at the same say that a person who is not disabled is not mentally ill. Sigmund Freud started what I call subjective psychotherapy. The assumption that, what we now know, to be a debilitating cognitive problem which is in fact a chemical imbalance and thus all the introspective Freudian psychotherapy assumes EVERY problem can be talked away. Freud did not have access to the medications we have today. Science is promising newer innovations all the time while still admitting that the brain is very complex.
This is why I fight tooth and nail resenting the idea that depression for instance has anything to do with any single event or perhaps an abandonment issue. If you really want the truth, Any perceived feelings of abandonment come from the over inflated egos in academia who seem to believe their higher education somehow Trumps common sense. I believe strongly that I have been one of those unfortunate victims who have suffered needlessly at the hand of the academic pseudo Intellectuals. I have a saying “ If you cannot then intellectualize. Intellectualizing is a problem I too am personally guilty of.
The fact is it is and always has been a phobia. How I got it I have no idea. And what did I do about it? Intellectualize. I do not know exactly what defense mechanism label that would come under. Yes for years I theorized and wrote essays that would fool an academic. Sure I knew how to write and I had all the vocabulary and for what? The reality is that I have spent a lifetime intellectualizing, Analyzing and generalizing a problem that all along was a phobia. How is it that the grand wizards and encapsulation of all wisdom, the epitome of all scholars known honorably as mental health professionals, could not pick that up? Maybe the obvious answer lies in another criticism I have with an overwhelming number of scholars is that they have learned how to absorb an inordinate amount of information without the ability to process it or even question it. They become overwhelmed and their logical thinking shuts down. After the death of reason they rise as do zombies who want to eat your brain. They become automatons who like computers can only process what ever they have been programed to process. There is a new discipline known as cognitive psychology which bases their theories on the comparison of humans to computers. How I am not surprised.
It never ceases to amaze me how theoretical science manages to take the most complex of all, the human mind and try so hard to minimalize or encapsulate it into such simplistic metaphors. The theory of evolution will always stand as the most amazing paradoxical human achievement in the area of minimalism and the complexity of how well humans know how to rationalize. It is the most complex way of saying we are not really that complex. And this is all courtesy of an educational system where people learn a whole new science of stupidity ironically mislabeled reason. Things never really change. 2000 years we had a similar institution called the Catholic Church. They had patron saints for pretty well anything as do we today, experts for pretty well everything. Why do we need to reason? The real question. Do we even believe we are capable of reason? What is left to think about if there is always someone else trying to convince you they know better so why even try. The zombie apocalypse has already happened and we don't even know it. I think the problem is compounded exponentially by those who think they are experts based on their plethora knowledge of other experts. I think you can see where this is all leading. A complete shut down in independent thought. When I first read the story in the bible in Revelation about Satan and his demons being cast to the earth and woe for the earth, I was perplexed as to how they were going to accomplish this covert operation. Now I understand it all too clearly.
It is really an obtuse pyramid scheme which really does not represent a pyramid at all. In fact there is no known geometry to explain it. All I can say is there is no one at the switch. I like the word used in physics “ entanglement “ . But I guess it would be either arrogance or delusional thinking on my part to say that I still remain unchanged and still fighting off the academic zombies who are still trying to eat my brain. Through some miracle and Eric Fromm would have been proud, I have avoided this cataclysmic tendency towards automatism. Then I guess I am not out of the woods yet.
