Since 2018, Ian Irvine, also the creative force behind internationally recognised Australian Indie band 'Interstitium', has been working on a solo project linked to 31 songs + 4 significant song fragments that he co-wrote with various members of 90s Australian alt. rock band 'G.C. (Original)' (Which he founded with James Mannix in mid-1991 and fronted until his departure).
The songs linked to this new project are re-imaginings of all of the songs Ian co-wrote with the members of G.C. (Original) - most of which were not professionally recorded before Ian left that band in the mid-90s. Around 20 of the 31 songs to feature here were, however, performed live at various G.C. (Original) gigs. Many of these new versions have been heavily re-imagined with new millennium instrumentation etc. by Ian, with the assistance of world class producers and session musicians operating out of London (UK), Europe and Nashville TN (USA). Please note: G.C. (Original) musicians (except Ian) do not appear on these tracks, and have not contributed to the new elements to be found in many of the songs.
OVERVIEW
This page features new recordings by "Ian Irvine - Solo", of 30 songs he co-wrote with the 5 piece Australian post-punk/alt rock band "G.C. (Original)". Ian, who was Manchester (UK) born, was lead singer and co-songwriter for G.C. (Original) for almost 3 years. After his departure the band morphed into a four-piece [nominally called "GC 2 (1994-2014)"]).
Memorial and Tribute Elements of the Project: This project is, in part, and necessarily so, a tribute to G.C. (Original) guitarist, James Mannix, who passed away in 2014, and G.C. (Original) bassist and co-singer, Liam Thorpe, who passed away in 2018. Rest in Peace both. This project should not be confused with either the original recordings/work etc. of G.C. (Original), which featured all five of the band's founding members, or later recordings of older songs - that had originally been co-written with Ian - recorded/produced by G.C. (2, late 1993-2014). Many of these new versions of early G.C. Original songs also feature at the full G.C.(Original) Authorsden site. Many of these re-imaginings have never before been professionally recorded, an a number were not even completed before Ian left the band and James and Liam passed away. This project is thus fundamentally a "Memorial/Tribute Song Completion project".
INFLUENCES
Given the influence of the 'Manchester sound' on G.C. (Original), Ian is often described as 'the 'Prodigal Son' of the Manchester music scene'. He was born, and for a time raised, amidst a remarkable cluster of musos - many of whom became key contributors to the development of punk rock, garage rock, post-punk rock, etc. - i.e. bands like The Stone Roses, The Buzzcocks, The Drones, The Smiths, New Order, The Verve, James, The Happy Mondays, Joy Division, Simply Red, The Charlatans, Oasis, The Fall and so on, were all formed, played and recorded albums in Manchester between 1976 and 1996 . Not surprisingly, given most of the band were Australians, and Ian had lived in Australia and NZ for many years prior to the formation of the band, G.C.(Original) fused/mainlined UK alt rock with early 90s Australian Alt. Rock and Post-punk influences to create a unique international sound.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THESE SONG
This site operates independently of the GC 2 archive sites run by Richie O'Neill (the band's long's term drummer) and Y.T. (the band's long-term synth player). It is also independent of Ian's 'The History of G.C. (Original)' web-page on show here at Authorsden. The site is also independent of Ian's involvement with the contemporary Australian alt rock band "Interstitium" (which he has fronted and written award winning songs for since 2014). You will need to go to the GC (Original) website, here at Authorsden, to hear early recordings of some of the songs featured here. Ian possesses approximately 50 hrs of GC (1) recordings, live gig recordings and jam session recordings related to the creation of approximately 38 early G.C. (Original) songs and song fragments. The re-recordings/re-imaginings you will find here are based upon very early recordings, though in some cases, given some song recordings represented only incomplete song fragments, new structural, lyrical and melodic elements have been added to complete those songs for posterity.
NOTE: G.C. (2) songs feature at separate Reverbnation and FB sites curated by O'Neill and Y.T.. Visitors to: a) this site + the G.C. (Original) history site here at ADen; and b) GC 2 sites will notice a double-up of about 8 songs, this is because some GC (Original) songs were re-worked and re-recorded etc. by GC (2) (1994-2014). Six of those reworked GC (Original) songs (along with other G.C. 2 songs) also featured on the sound track to the internationally released Australian Indie movie "Freedom Deep." A number of G.C. (Original) songs have been played on Australian radio (including the renowned Australian alternative station JJJ) and both versions of the band frequently played live at iconic Victorian music venues.

1.Sadly, two former GC (1&2) bandsmen have passed away in recent years. The new versions of songs that Ian originally co-wrote with GC (Original) are dedicated to the memory of James Mannix and Liam Thorpe. Rest in Peace both.

All the songs to feature at this site are also dedicated to Ian's life partner Dr. Sue King-Smith and the many friends, fellow creatives (and not just musicians but writers, poets, visual artists and so on), as well as the loyal GC (Original) fans who knew and understood our real underlying story, and then acted to support and sustain me - and offer perspective - during the difficult years. You know who you are, and you will always be in my heart.
