The unfair means to win the trust vote... Were they justified?

As the UPA successfully tied all the loose strings to win the trust vote in the Parliament, there is a dark side to the same story. They are charged with bribing a few MP's to procure their trust. So while one news channel flashes the poised stance of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh displaying the victory sign, another one shows bundles of currency notes "used" to buy that confidence.

It is an age-old fact that money can make mountains move and the statement may hold true in yet another instance. This can be foul play but looking at the series of events that happened before this, one would agree that those occurrences were not a result of a fair game either. The Left parties literally enjoyed "Veto" power on most of the legislations during the last four years as it considers itself one of the most important pillars on which the UPA government stands. The PM himself stated that he was expected to behave as a "bonded slave". The BJP acted as a true opposition and practically opposed every move of the government. Mayawati and Amar Singh's decisions were inspired by their own aspirations and expectations.

In such a scenario, the UPA might have used iniquitous means to secure their goal. It could simply have been a measure to put a stop to the misgovernance due to the coalition obligations, bring the government back on track and proceed with whatever needs to be achieved in the last year of its rule. There was a possibility that if the Parliament was to dissolve in the midst of unfinished tasks, rising inflation and an ongoing nuclear deal which created the whole fuss, it would never be able to woo the voters for the next term. Moreover, the sense of accomplishment which a PM of Manmohan Singh's stature would like to have at the end of the term would be missing. He made it clear in his speech that all the major issues apart from the nuclear deal are being looked after. He talks of alleviation of poverty to which he himself can relate to as a child along with economic growth.

Although these arguments can't justify resorting to inducement, the chaos needed to be brought to an end. Bribery is however a vicious circle and those who can accept money to alter their speech in the Parliament can offer the same during prosecution to be proved innocent. Even if the innocent ones are pulled into this scandal, they can be proved guilty by the further use of might. So the real facts behind the entire issue are always going to be a secret. In addition, the MP charged of corruption can also quote previous judgements where it was ruled that a MP cannot be tried for his speech in the Parliament to remain off the hook.
Yet the "voters" would never let them go scot-free and their characters will always remain tainted in the eyes of the Indian citizen as will be the victory of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
