It is 6:00am and there is not a human sound around. I quickly drink a cup of coffee and throw on some sweat pants, a t shirt, and some walking shoes. It is a glorious morning for a walk. I toss a hooded sweatshirt over my shoulder and bound from the porch.
I head down the street listening to the sound of cars in a distance on the interstate. There is not a soul to be seen it is as if no one were awake but I. The wind is blowing, I hear the rustle of leaves and see the trees slightly bow. The crows are searching for breakfast and their caws can be heard overhead. The sky in places is black and other places the sun shines brightly. The clouds are scooting quickly, across the bright morning sky. The small birds, chickadees, golden finches and wrens are singing loudly and I ‘m glad I left my CD player home. I’m interested only in the sound and the sight of nature this beautiful morning.
I leave my street and begin walking briskly on the River Road towards the lake. The homes are all silent. As I approach the lake, I ‘m nearly blinded by the sun’s reflection. In the bay the water is very calm and reflects the raft and docks on the surface of the lake. Not far from shore, duckweed peek their heads through the water. In the bay, a pair of mallard ducks, swim and dive for their breakfast. Water bugs scoot across the surface and minnows sparkle beneath. Brightly colored leaves float and the reflection of the red and yellow trees is breath taking. On all sides of me are summer cabins where tourists come to soak in the beauty and escape the rush of the city. Smoke gently waifs from the chimney’s and I can picture huge stone fireplaces warming the early morning chill.
I continue onto the state highway. I turn right and pass by the post office. There is a bright red bicycle parked out front ready to be someone’s transportation of the day.
I continue on, to the right are small homes and to the left are wet lands. As I pass by I hear a bull frog croak good morning. So far I have only seen two cars pass by carrying people either out to get an early start on the day or headed for his or her job. Other than that it is still and very quiet.
I continue on and to my left is a campsite by the river. All is peaceful and I can imagine heads on pillows and wonderful dreams. The sign out front says “ fresh Maine lobster ”, I smile we are a long way from Maine. The bridge over the river is just ahead of me, the water is high this year from all of the rain we have had. It rushes quickly under the bridge and downstream. Perhaps a canoe trip down the river now would be without portage. The sand bars would be well covered with rushing water. The ribbon of river disappears beyond a bend.
On my right I approach the small country cemetery . It is on a sloping hill and the people here I believe are actually at rest in beautiful surroundings. It is here that generations of my husbands’ family are buried. I enjoy walking through and reading headstones, it is a nostalgic trip back in time.
It is time for me to retrace my steps back over the bridge.
Once there I turn left and follow a path along the river. It is very secluded and I hoped to see some wildlife, perhaps a deer. All the wild life I see today are the few deer fly that have decided to walk with me. The river is to my left and on the opposite side is a pebble beach where I used to take my boys swimming when they were young and rowdy. We spent long days swimming and floating on this river when the weather was especially hot and humid.
I walk into silent deeper woods and continue on to the River Road.
At the River Road I turn right and try to out walk the deer flies. On the left on a hillside is my oldest sons’ chalet style home it too, is silent this early in the morning. I know inside three of my grandsons are dreaming sweet dreams of skate boards and bicycles.
I see a clearing. It is newly cut and being prepared for a new module home to be trucked in.
I ‘m almost back home. About 200 ft. ahead of me I see the first humans I have seen this morning. They are strolling, arm and arm down the road enjoying the silence and beauty of the morning. I pass by my brother-in-law’s home and take a left turn onto my street. The grass in the yard is freshly mown and the hanging planter on the porch is full of eye-catching blooms. Time to return to the world. I enter my home and start a fresh pot of coffee and turn on the computer.
Where are we going? Oh were walking and feeling life about us. What motivation. By the end of your read, I'm not walking but I'm going out now for a much needed bike for a change. Thanks for the push, Wow! isn't that amazing, you got me out and away from the computer with a positive air. Nice description. I liked the way you came back to the computer refreshed.

You lifted my dulled spirit. Your writing is a special treat. Thanks.
What a beautiful walk and how well you did the writing. I felt like I was there and found it to be very a very interesting walk. I like the idea that you are surrounded with family. Mine are spred all over the USA. I did get the urge to start walking again, so perhaps when you are on your next walk, I will be there as well, only a State or two away. Thanks little darling.
