Oakland police captain Edward Poulson was suspended with pay this past Thursday because of allegations that in April of 2000, he repeatedly “kicked” a man by the name of Jerry Amaro in the ribs soo hard that he broke five of the victim’s ribs! The Oakland District’s Attorney Office has turned the investigation over to the FBI. The amazing fact about this officer is that he was later placed in charge of the Internal Affairs Division, and promoted to captain! The victim died about a month after the beating with no charges placed against the officer. The victim’s complaints about the beating simply felled on deaf ears!

Now the shocking part of this story (not to me) is that nine years later, other officers are admitting that they lied for officer Poulson, that they saw the beating, and that the beating was unprovoked! They also have reportedly stated that officer Poulson asked them to lie for him!  In other words, cops lying for a rogue cop!  Another amazing fact about this case is that the officer’s crimes were reported to the FBI because many officers had an issue with officer Poulson being promoted to run internal affairs! 

The Oakland Police Department has been rocked by numerous scandals of police abuses in the past year or so. Falsification of search warrants, a deputy police chief harassing a female employee, shootings of unarmed victims, and a litany of other charges and allegations against ranked officers!

Vice Mayor of Oakland, Ignacio De Le Fuente stated, “We are in chaos and no end in sight to some of the problems we are facing here when it comes to the police department”.  Council member Jane Brunner stated, “Officer Poulson’s (past) record should have been considered”. She further stated, ”He should have been vetted” (investigated). It’s also reported that two senior members of the police department had advised the police chief not to placed officer Poulson in charge of internal affairs because of the Jerry Amaro case.

My take:

As I just wrote in an article entitled, “Double the penalty for corrupt cops”, dated January 21, 2009, just two days ago…why would any of you believe that a police officer would be salivating to end another cops career? This is a type of fraternity, an exclusive club, dedicated in most instances to protecting themselves, no matter the cause!

Those officers who first observed the beating did just what I did thirty years ago as a rogue cop…SAID NOTHING AT THE TIME! Oftentimes, when I think back to that first day when I observed another police officer beat a prisoner or sexually violated a female it makes me ill! I also said nothing, turned a blind eye, and eventually even lied for him when the complaints were filed! Later, I felled into the trap…becoming a rogue cop, hence the name of my book, COP OUT. I did just that, COP OUT on society for not standing up to that corruption! Sick times! I will say this though, I’m happy that the officers eventually told the truth. But on the other hand, they might have to live with the fact that a man died as a result of their inactions. Somebody should have stopped the kicking!

Now, I actually know and have spoken to a few of the cops on the force, and they told me that all of this stemmed from jealousy. What? Well my contacts tell me that many of the officers that was against him, especially the rank officers, didn’t “rat” him out because of a sudden propensity for honesty, (they long ago knew the truth about the beating as many officers share this with other brother officers), but because they wanted that position, and couldn’t believe he attained that position over them. Many of them surmised, “He’s head of internal affairs, after beating that guy". Many officers on police departments constantly jockey for promotions and recognition.  

(Please note: This is precisely why I’ve stated to many of you, be very careful. I’ve known cops that will actually seek a situation like a shoot out for recognition, awards, plaques, promotions, and to become featured in news articles or television interviews).

Nevertheless, if true , I’m happy that these jealousies and infightings exposed the truth that the victim wasn’t lying and maybe his death will be notice. Please remember, as I’ve often said, police officers are humans also. Many are honorable but when you run across a rogue cop, it’ll change your life, and can even bring death! 

This type of case is precisely why I've dedicated the rest of my life to "outting" rogue police officers. I've created many alliances with many ex-police officers, current police officers in many states, attorneys, and common citizens and groups, and wish to thank them all for assisting me with this mission. These types of crimes will never be stop entirely, but at least we may be able to reduce the incidences, and punish those who are guilty!

Unfortunately, many people won't get involve and protest these crimes until their children or love ones are killed, beaten, or maimed by a rogue cop...the worst kind of criminal!
