Where were you when our Nation was attacked? Will we ever forget?

Where were you when our Nation was attacked? For those of us that are old enough, certain events stand out in our minds; we remember where we were and what we were doing.

I live in Burleson, TX (12 miles due south of downtown Fort Worth).

That Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I had just awakened, gotten dressed for work, and came downstairs with my twin sister. Like I always do every morning, I turned on our local news; it helps me to wake up. I now wish I hadn't turned it on, but that wouldn't have changed anything.

It was around 7:40 A.M. (CST), and the usual news, weather and sports was on; kind of like background noise. Suddenly, a breaking story ensued: a plane had (apparently) accidently ran into one of the World Trade Center Towers. I looked at my twin sister, and we both expressed shock and horror. I thought it was bound to happen one of these days...you see planes flying around tall buildings all of the time. (Like at Love Field in Dallas...that airport is located in downtown Dallas.) We said a prayer for those affected...and then...and then...the second plane came in and hit the second Tower.

THE SECOND PLANE CAME IN AND HIT THE SECOND TOWER.

Deliberately. It angled in. Aimed right for the Tower. Right then and there, I KNEW. I KNEW we were under attack. This was NO accident. A sick feeling of shock...fear...horror...unbelief. NO WAY, man, NOT HERE. Not in the United States. Not IN the UNITED STATES!!!!

I had to go to work, so I didn't get to watch the news until much later on in the evening. My twin sister was so upset at what she had seen, she turned off the news and refused to watch.

When I got home later on in the day, she was still scared and upset, so we went to church. We both prayed, and she was delivered of a spirit of fear. We had a bite to eat and then came home; she went to bed, and thankfully, slept well.

NOT ME. I turned on the TV and watched the news for three straight hours. The images played over and over and over and over and over and OVER again, searing into my mind. The planes hitting. The bursts of smoke and flame. Paper and debris falling like confetti, like at a ticker tape parade. People jumping. The Towers falling--first one, then the other. The awful cloud of dust and debris chasing people down the streets. The looks of shock on everyone's faces. The President speaking to our Nation, tears and the steely resolve in his eyes. The sight of Congress spontaneously singing, "God Bless America". I saw all this, and more. I cried like I had never cried before, and wrote the first of many poems I've written since THAT day.

I don't sleep too well anymore...nightmares wake me up on occasion, or else words in my mind wake me up, and I have to write them down, or I'll forget them. I've written over 40 poems now.

Where were you on September 11? I know where I was, and I'll never forget. I know where I was when Kennedy was shot. I know where I was when man first landed on the moon. I know where I was when Elvis died. When the Challenger exploded. When the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed. And now, when America was attacked.

Karla,
I too remember all too well all those terrible memories you spoke of and where I was at the time.
The shock of seeing the trade center burning was one thing, but when they fell it might as well crushed me too!
I have lost friends from the police and fire depts as you know and friends working in the financial district and the towers.
My best man was trapped in the subway underneath because he worked in Brooklyn, He lived thank God. My other friend
in my wedding party had a wife that didn't make it. Til this day I still can't believe they are gone. It is a hurt that will never be repaired.
I have no immediate family left so my friends are even more important to me now than ever. I pray for the fallen everyday and my sadness is just to deep
to do justice but I try just as you do. God Bless you my friend. Love Gregg

I thought I rated this- fantastic piece and Im so glad you give rise to your voice when
SO MANY others have been silenced. It is my belief that by having them remembered- thier voices are not really diminished and the
terrorists have NOT won anything at all.
love ya karla- YOU GO GIRRRL- donna

It was an unbelievable day. I work in the FDNY (New York's Fire Dept) in the South Bronx...I knew about forty of the guys killed there (every one of their stories is devastating). My brother's Company lost seven members and their rig...some Companies lost ten and twelve members. It started one of the darkest, most grim six month stretches in the FDNY's history. They are just now finishing up the sifting through the debris for body parts and many of the parts logged in have yet to be ID'd. It's been a very long seven months. // As for me, I was in the kitchen of a South Bronx firehouse...we weren't called down there until Wed around noon and stayed til Thursday at 7 am...then worked every other 24 hours for the next ten days...then a rotating set of 9 hours on and 21 hours off.

I read this and cried. It touched me to know that someone so far away could really understand what it was like here. Thank you for sharing such an emotional view.
