The weather in Texas is one of my favorite subjects, as you can tell. I'm a Texan now; most Texans talk & talk about the weather. If you don't like it, they say, stick around, it'll change in five minutes or so.
There's such a diversity here. Take cold, dry air from the North. Warm, drier air from the Rocky Mountains. A "dry line" separates the drier air from the warm, moist, humid, sticky air to the East. All this in combination results in an unstable atmosphere...& it usually combines right over Texas. North Central Texas seems to be in the target area.
Result? Thunderstorms. Hail. High winds. Flooding rains. Severe lightning. Tornadoes. Not all of the time, mind you, but one time is one time too many if you ask me!!!!
Like last night.
It was windy & warm here yesterday. There was a "heaviness" to the air; you knew something was brewing. Around 4:30 p.m., the clouds started to build up rapidly. By 5:00, all of North Central Texas was put under a tornado watch (conditions are right for tornadoes to form).
Were they ever right...
Around 5:30, the clouds got ugly. REALLY ugly. It got dark, the winds died down, there was a greenish tint to the sky. To the West, we could see funnel clouds dipping down. And here we are...no danged basements to hide in!!!!
Thank God, thank God, we didn't get anything right here where we live, but in Fort Worth & Arlington, they had several confirmed twisters & there was quite a bit of damage. Some minor injuries, nothing more. It could have been so much worse. (Remember March 28, 2000? Downtown Fort Worth had a major tornado hit right in the downtown area...four people died as a result of the storms...that's 12 miles due north of where I live, in Burleson...12 miles too close!!!!)
The weather service is saying there could be more thunderstorms late this afternoon & into this evening; some of them could be severe. AGAIN. (They ARE saying it shouldn't be like last night, however. WE CAN ONLY HOPE.)
I guess you know where I'll be sleeping again tonight...downstairs in the little-bitty-itsy-bitsy-teeny-tiny half bathroom that's in my apartment. I'd rather be in underground shelter, like in a basement!!!!
