Isn't this about being mean?
Personally I had no way of knowing Abbie Hoffman. I don't know what he was like. Perhaps I didn't miss anything. Then maybe I did. I think he tried to make a difference in this world or, at least, he thought he was trying. I don't know which is true r. But when he died it was like when Cass Elliott died--some people can't resist making vicious comments. Really hurtful ones. The comments about Elliott referred to her weight, of course, and the manner in which she died. I, for one, liked her singing therefore felt offended by the nasty comments. When Hoffman died, a supposedly prestigious business entrepreneur said yes, he remembered HER. He'd talked to HER once in an interview or something similar. This remark, which was printed in the media(that's okay--free press), struck me as being particularly cruel. Of course, these deaths occurred years ago, but I have a point(2 points actually) I'd like to make. These are--1) At what stage in life do we become so superior to others--when we get a few extra dimes to jingle in our pockets? 2) I think we "pay" eventually for remarks like these. Can't you think of a similar case? Sometimes those types of people to whom we've been unduly cruel have an uncanny way of showing up amongst our nieces and nephews--or beloved grandchildren. Let's face it--in this sense a lot of us humans are simply dumb and shortsighted. We never care nor know what's coming our way!
