Is this inspiring? I can't be the judge of that. Anyway, if you like a bit of nostalgia...
It was terrible—all that worry over sex. Would I perform well? What if this, what if that? Trying to be cool, accepted by your peers. Time seemed to crawl then, but not for long! At least I can empathize today with the teens I teach. I try to help them by representing some kind of stability. They have a lot of problems. We did, too, of course, but our standard of living was maybe higher and perhaps there were fewer broken homes. I’m not as worried about how much they learn at school as I am about how much they will learn AFTER their school years are over. There’s the key, you see. I learned so much more after school than I ever did in it. Even after university, I learned so much more. That’s because I always liked to learn. Learning was and is a lifetime endeavor for me. If I am anything close to being a good teacher(Who can really say?), it is because I love learning and love to see others learn. It is because I am an example for my students. It is because I really get to the place where I care about them. Each one. They become my life. They distract me and, with their shenanigans, keep me alert and young. One day is good, the next can be bad. On some of them I feel like screaming and jumping into the open drainage ditch near our school and ending it all. (Actually, it’s only about a foot and a half deep if it isn’t raining.) But I don’t. I go on and on, almost like those fabled VW bugs. Remember? So, at least I’m there, I’m stable for them in a world quite unstable in far too many aspects.
Back to the title topic. The dandruff—it was always getting on the shoulders of my navy blue blazer. A girl would notice it and, well...
James Brown with his fast beat! How I loved Benton’s “Rainy Night in Georgia,” Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Have You Seen Her?” and so many other greats. Movies, the fast food joints. Starting to college was great but at the same time fearsome. Would we make it for four years? The club sandwiches(helped) and french fries in the canteen. The scuba diving course I failed and didn’t dare try anymore. Going to big Atlanta to finish university there! Wasn’t that practically taking on the world?
Oh well. That’s enough nostalgia for the moment. Some people like to read “stuff” like this, others don’t. So if they don’t, they don’t. Isn’t prerogative a beautiful word in this world of ours? Thanks for reading
