My wife and I just returned from a cruise to the Caribbean. Our Ship was huge and there were other cruise ships in the harbor waiting to depart that day.
We checked into out room about one pm.
As I looked out from the balcony I noticed a boat with blue lights flashing. This boat had no police or Coast Guard markings, just a plain boat with blue lights. He was going back and forth around the ships making all the private boats on the Intercostal Waterway keep well away from the cruise ships.
I realized when the unmarked boat was joined by other boats clearly marked as police boats that the reason they were there was obvious.
They were to protect the ships that had thousands of tourists aboard. Then I felt sad realizing that the ships were "Soft Targets," and one good sized boat loaded with explosives could result in horrific damage and loss of many lives.
It is very sad to me that the world is in such a state that we need such measures, very sad indeed. I felt sorry for the world we will leave to our Grand Children.
I've witnessed similar Coast Guard boats around the Perry Nuclear Power Plant on Lake Erie for a long time after 9/11. What could they do? "I believe the children are our future...........".
It may be very hard to get rid of the mental illness that makes people angry and hateful, but we can try by not using financial or military muscle to manipulate cultures and try to make them "like ours." CIA manipulation.
An unbelievable number of countries have been rocked with unrest as a result of vast differences between the favored and the unfavored in those countries. The United States was like that in 1776 and then again, in 1860. As long as people are unsatisfied with their status quo and can be manipulated by charismatic evildoers, there will be danger. The cure for that is to give everyone a break.
Probably the result of those police boats, passengers like you are safer than you were say, 20 years ago. It's all a matter of perception. The good old days were not that good. Much of the crap going on then was either swept under the rug or never reported. Back in mid 20th century there were two documentaries that were quite revealing… An Italian movie translated title, "World of Dogs," and another European movie describing atrocities in Africa, "African Addio." Now we can see exposés like that every day on Frontline and other news reports. The world is not worse, we just know more about it.
