At first, Gregory (who played Jeff Trent) wanted nothing to do with Plan 9.

Gregory said;

“I read the script and it was gibberish. It made no sense.”

Gregory finally agreed to do it, not knowing that Plan 9 would be the movie everyone asks him about, even though he worked with many great stars and directors.

Gregory played key roles in four Clint Eastwood movies; Joe Kidd, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Eiger Sanction & Every Which Way But Loose.

He had a meaty role in the Lee Marvin / Gene Hackman movie Prime Cut playing a meat-packer-gangster. His character's name was 'Weenie' because he liked hot dogs.

In 1998, while making an appearance in the movie about making Plan 9 titled Ed Wood,

Gregory said;

“I will go to my grave not remembered for meaty roles (his words, not mine) that I did for the likes of John Ford or Steven Spielberg, but as the leading man in a film most historians consider the worst movie ever made.”

Gregory’s cameo in the Tim Burton directed, Johnny Depp starrer, shows that he finally did come to accept his role in the now classic, but infamous, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Talk about ‘coming full circle’.

In the Ed Wood movie, Gregory is the older, grey-haired man in the Brown Derby scene when Ed meets Vampira. His first line is: "I don't know. Lagosi looks pretty old."

After filming the scene, Gregory said:

"I didn't want to be remembered for Plan 9 from Outer Space, but it's better to be remembered for something than for nothing, don't you think?"
