By listening to the whispers within us we can find the answers we seek to the questions life presents.
Whispers
“No trumpets sound when the important decisions of our life are made. Destiny is made known silently.”
Agnes DeMille
When I was a child my mother used to tell me the following when I asked her why I couldn’t hear God talking to me. She said, “God talks in a whisper at times and we must be diligent and quiet in listening.” I’ve never forgotten her words and they reverberate through my mind each time I look at the decisions I make in my life. Why can’t I hear the answers to my questions? Who can I turn to when I need advise or help in decision making?
“This is as true in everyday life as it is in battle: we are given one life and the decision is ours whether to wait for circumstances to make up our mind, or whether to act, and in acting, to live.”
General Omar Bradley
It seems that from my many conversations with my mother her remarks always taught me to look inward for answers and to be still. I listen for that quiet answer – that whisper and when I understand my question I then can act decisively and have no regrets with the results. It is when I run from one place or thought to another that I cannot become sure of my decisions. I seem to be running away from answers instead of quietly listening for them.
“When you determined what you want, you have made the most important decision of your life. You have to know what you want in order to attain it.”
Douglas Lurtan
I think that knowing what you want can be one of the most difficult of life’s challenges. It is easier to tell someone else what to do than to know with assurance what you want to do. It is a challenge to say the least to make a decision without doubting the outcome or worrying about the reactions of others. It is easier to continue the running than to become steadfast in a decision that will affect the rest of your life.
“Every man who observes vigilantly, and resolves steadfastly, grows unconsciously into genius.”
Edward Bulwer-Lytton
It is by stopping the running and removing the anxiety that such running produces that allows us to hear the whispers of our soul. It is within these whispers that we find the answers and the direction we need to take in life. But stopping the crazy pace of our lives is only half the work needed. We also need to record our thoughts and realized within them lays the true whisper we need to hear.
“A loud voice cannot compete with a clear voice, even if it's a whisper.”
Barry Neil Kaufman
As I approach some of the hardest decisions of my life I look inward, silently with intent, to hear the true whispers of my heart. I listen with all my being because I know that by listening I will discover the pathway I am to follow. In quiet I tune into the vibrations of my soul. I settle into this quiet and wait for the answers to appear.
“Let your heart guide you. It whispers, so listen closely.”
The Land Before Time
Listen closely to the murmurs of your innermost being. Listen closely to the thoughts and desires of your heart. Listen closely for the one word that will create the drive and ambition you need to succeed in your life’s quest. Listen…………….what do you hear?
“Happiness is as a butterfly which when pursued is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly may alight upon you.”
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804 - 1864)
