Today’s Children as Seen through the Eyes of Grandparents

When we were children, despite the period of war and the lack of wealth, we have all known a relatively peaceful life. Consequently it is correct to say that today’s children will grow under constant pressure.  We used to walk to kindergarten, which in fact was a short walk in the village or in the town where we lived. Today we rarely see kindergarten students enjoying the privilege we had.

At noon we used to go home for lunch, surrounded by our family members. Today students eat lunch at the school cafeteria with fast food service, surrounded by their peers and the cafeteria personnel. When we were young we knew almost everyone in the village.  Today the village has been transformed into developments and into large parks for relaxation and parking lots for the cars.

Today the mothers have less time with their children, as they too have to work and are under constant pressure of time and under the weight of things still to do, such as picking-up the children from school, then driving them to music class, to soccer, to football, or to other lessons.  All kind of shopping, cleaning cooking, and sometime they have to drive a friend’s kid to the gym or other places.  The children are pushed around from place to place, they don’t have the time to relax or to enjoy their parents’ presence and even less so their grandparents’, or to enjoy the love we have known from our parents.  Many times I saw children picked-up not by parents but by a stranger whom they paid for this service. One may ask, what will become of these children in ten, twenty years from now. With this thought in mind, I wonder when they have time to study and I only hope that everyone will be kind with these new generations, and help them, wherever they may be, and in whichever way possible.
