The lives of children are in the hands of adults who are not always capable of handling that responsibility, especially if they have not found their own direction. Since they are ostensibly mature, parents take possession of their children and make decisions for them concerning their futures. As a matter of fact, their role should be very different. Parents should be preparing their children to become independent. It is actually detrimental to children when their parents attempt to hold on to them and stifle them with the kind of love that is a form of selfishness and a sign of the parent’s inaptitude in the role of caretaker.
There is a form of love that is expressed in respect for freedom. Such love involves not merely words and kisses, but good thoughts and generous and disinterested actions. Such love is offered without reservation, limitation or expectation. It allows us to love different people in different ways. Such love is a moral wealth that obviates hatred and restores its true meaning to life. It allows us to appreciate goodness, beauty and perfection; it introduces us to joy, peace and security; it gives us faith in our beliefs, and strengthens our resolve in believing in our destiny.
Some parents are just caretakers, others just their bad look, fewer and fewer are the parents that wished to be and that every child wants and deserve.
I agree that children should be taught to be independent...but I also know how difficult it is to raise a child who needs no parents or authorities, because they know better...because they are too independent. I worry about my child who is this way...and wonder if they will be able to have a strong marriage.
This experience has taught me the importance of teaching our children that trusting and relying on other people for some things is a necessary part of life. We can't to everything by ourselves. And...most importantly to me...I want my children to know that they are dependent on the Lord for everything.
And...without dependency...I believe there is no gratitude...and without gratitude...well...we are pretty sorry creatures.
