Why would anyone want to be legally married?

Marriage! Why?

Why do gays (or anyone) want to be legally married?

After hearing, reading, and thinking about the gay marriage issue for several months, I have come to realize that the whole concept of any marriage is wrong.

I recently read a joke about marriage that is sad but true and I would like to share it with you.  Not all marriages end in divorce, but all divorces begin with marriage.  I have also read that 50% of all marriages in the US end in divorce.  So, let’s get to the root of the problem and change the system that isn’t working.  Please don’t assume that I am against gay marriage; I am against all marriage!

It is increasingly difficult to find someone to love that will love you back, so if you do get lucky, why would you strain that relationship with a written legal contract?  Some people may feel threatened by a legal document that instantly gives half of everything they have worked for to someone that hasn’t proven themselves over time.  That same contract may be responsible for some marriages to start off with a couple being less than honest about what they do or don’t have.  Wouldn’t it be productive to a long-lasting relationship if you were totally honest with your chosen partner?

Which is more important, the legal contract or the depth of commitment?

The divorce rate answers this question much better than I could.  The best-written legal contract in the world won’t sustain a relationship that is lacking commitment.  However, a relationship that has a very strong commitment will withstand most of the human failures including the lack of a legal contract.

People always seem to ask:  But what about children?

A few years ago my wife and I adopted a six-year-old child that had lived his entire life in an orphanage.  I wasn’t certain that we had enough to offer a child because the main focus of the adoption process was around money and monetary possessions.  After months of running a financial gauntlet, we finally got to bring our child home.  It was then that I learned that all of the red tape was for the bureaucrats and the child didn’t know or care about money.  He just wanted someone to love him.  He didn’t care if he had one mom and one dad or two moms or two dads and he couldn’t care less about their marital status.

Let’s think about children.

From a homeless child’s perspective, I fail to see the difference between a loving happy couple and a loving gay couple.  Any couple should pass all of the same requirements that they now do including extensive background checks.  It is imperative that a child’s safety comes first.  I realize that most of the homosexual couples that we do hear about are seen in a bad light and may not provide an environment suitable for kids.  However, what about the ones we don’t hear about?  There may be hundreds of thousands of stable loving homes just waiting and wanting to meet the needs of a child, but they are not legally married.

What about religion?

If I recall correctly, it is written in the Bible: “Judge not”.

In conclusion:

I don’t understand the validity of a legal marriage.  I believe that a couple should still have the opportunity to be married in a church and pledge their vows to each other and

God.  However, Uncle Sam should stay out of it.

The article is right in the perspective with which it is presented. It is true that a strong relationship and a child who wants love does not lead a legal document to perpetuate it. Marriage is a matter of individual choice- one cannot make sweeping statements whether one should or one should do. 50% of marriages work-Its all a matter of looking the glass half empty or half full. One has to try or discover for himself or not try if one so wishes.
