My opinions on romance.

I realise that all periods in history have their advantages and disadvantages, but if there were a period that I would wish to have been born in, it would be the Medieval period. And why? Well, because of the romance. I consider myself to be a romantic person. Now, without the unsanitary conditions and the sickness that plagued that period, I think I could have lived in that time very nicely. Yes, women were considered somewhat inferior to men, but I think that the thick line that separated the sexes gave way to the romance of that era. Chivalry was a way of life then, and love was an adventure for people of any age. Gentlemen mastered the art of gallantry, and ladies feigned disgust at their advances. There was an excitement about winning the hand of a fair maiden, and a wonderful thrill about being won. Men were men and women were women; the definitions that separated them were distinct, the rolls that separated them were distinct.

Today women are insulted by a gentleman’s attempt to offer her a seat on a bus, or open a car door for her. As she has decided that she does not want to be considered the “weaker vessel”, she has picked up a jack hammer and gone to work along-side her male counter-parts. She drives trucks, scales telephone poles, and slides herself under a car on a mechanic’s trolley. And what of the man who is innately born with the need to protect his woman? Well, he has been replaced with the woman’s self-sufficient manner, and independent lifestyle.

Now women have gained a lot over the years, in terms of social status, and I don’t mean to minimise this. But she has lost much in her role and status where the male/female relationship is concerned. And the thick line that once separated the sexes, thins out as women trade in some of their femininity for “equality”, and thus, settle for less masculine men. The language of romance faded out with the past, and the romantic way of life has sadly become demeaning. Well, in my opinion, the Women’s Liberation Movement and the uni-sex craze have directly contributed to the death of romance.
