What has Christmas become?

Essay:  Early Christmas

I have found that time has a way of getting away from me, the older I get.  Wasn’t it just yesterday that I carefully packed away all the Christmas ornaments and decorations, took down the outside wreaths and ribbons, and swept up the last of the pine needles?

Geez oh man, Christmas seems to arrive on or about the day after Halloween these days! Santa Claus is already everywhere and Thanksgiving is still around the corner. The stores in the malls have ordered abundantly to insure that after the holiday sales they can show a hefty bottom line at year’s end. The malls themselves put up their holiday signs and Christmas decorations increasingly early to entice us, knowing full well our propensity for overindulgence.

I find it distressing that Christmas has become, for most people, an “over” time. We overspend, we overeat, we over-party, and we end up trying to fit church and God -- the very reason there is a Christmas -- in between everything else on our overabundant holiday lists. About the only thing we don’t overdo in, is in taking the time to think about those less fortunate by dropping a few extra coins into the buckets when we see Santa’s helpers ringing their bells in front of the stores around town.

Please don’t misunderstand, everyone who knows me, knows that Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I can’t help myself. I get all swept up in the nostalgia and the warm and fuzzy feelings that surround this wondrous holiday.

Every year, I watch all the classic Christmas movies, crying as I watch The Gathering, laughing until I cry at Chevy Chase in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and I think Barbara Stanwyck is hilarious in Christmas in Connecticut (the original, not the remake with Dyan Cannon). Then who could ever forget Jimmy Stewart in It‘s a Wonderful Life? And finally, at least for me, Christmas just wouldn’t be complete until I watch Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and help them sing the theme song, “White Christmas”.  Corny?  Guilty as charged.  Heck, I even play Christmas carols and Christmas music while I cook Thanksgiving dinner, much to the amusement of my family and friends.

I vow to try harder this year, though. I’m going to remember and truly celebrate who this wonderful holiday is named for and what it’s about.  I’m going to focus my ‘over’ time on the people I care most about, those who care most about me, and those who have never had a visit from Santa Claus -- and what about my bottom line?   The only bottom line I’m going to be concerned with is the one I sit on … and I don’t want that one to get any bigger ...

A very apropos "Early Christmas" essay, CJ. I learned years ago to start gift-shopping early for family (as in June!) so as not to pinch my pocket-book.
Then, just after Thanksgiving, I begin my baking of home-made breads (banana-nut, orange-cranberry, and lemon-poppy seed), and making fudge (I've a great recipe I diddle with), given to and appreciated by family and friends.

Oh, the Christmas Season is such a happy time for me!

Thanks for sharing...but I guess this Christmas will be like all the others for me...boring and very unpleasant to watch those around me...bottled up to 0.99% before nature takes over and kick the hell out that head the next day!!

Nicely said. It reminds me of a cartoon I once saw in a magazine many years ago. Two fellows were walking down a snowy side walk at night. They walked past one house and it was engulfed in Christmas lights, with reindeer, elves and snowmen on the lawn, and a well lit giant Santa Claus on the roof. They stared for a moment and one remarked, Wow! What do you think? The other replied,“Those people really have the Christmas Spirit. Then they passed the nexthouse and there was only a small nativity scene in the window. Again, they stared
for a minute, and one commented to the other, “Hmmm...What do you think? The other fellow remarked, “I guess they’re not very eligious.”

Have a Holy Christmas and Merry and Warm one too..

I'd be happy to just have a wonderful dinner, limit gift buying to a few per person, put a wreath on the front door, put up a small tree, and just be with my family. I end up dreading the holidays each year because it turns into such a free for all. The best gift we can give each other is our love, and to renew our love for the Lord, as it is His birthday...not ours. This is a very good write. Perhaps you'll start a trend! Blessings to my friend...Michelle

CJ,

Tuesday night I saw an outdoor Christmas tree at a center standing tall and shining bright. I was shocked and disappointed like you. May all your holiday wishes come true and know I'll be singing White Christmas and Sisters somewhere in my living room, too.

Welcome back, CJ. Missed you!

Christmas! A beautiful time of year, but one that is not celebrated for the reason for the season. If might surprise many, but Christmas is not about them...it is about Christ...Jesus Christ, His birth...So, the best gift we can buy ourselves and others, is to give Him our lives. Your article, dear friend, is a lovely reminder to all to stop and reflect on the WHY of Christmas. Thank you so much for sharing it.
I love the Christmas movies, too. :)

Cheerio...God Bless
Lots of love

One of my wife's closest friends bought me a Santa hat with the name Scrooge on it. Not because I don't like Christmas, but because I detest all the trappings, commercialization, travel and downright silliness that pervades the holiday. However, when it comes time to have the kids and grand kid over and sit around on Christmas Day, I am thankful for all that I have. Fortunately for my wife I don't like to shop, put up lights or Christmas trees and she and the girls just love it. Soooo...you go with the flow. I do, however, get to balance the tree before Kathleen covers it with half of Target's complete inventory of Christmas decorations. We never know if it died, we can't see it.
The best part is showing up for opening the presents so I can see what we got the kids. lol

This is a much needed expose' of the commercialism of Christmas. The true spirit of Christmas has been overpowered by greed. I remember how we celebrated Christmas and the meaning of those days is now folklore it .Commercialism through greed pushes the beginning of the season earlier. It amazes me that people turn their heads and particapate blindly.
Bless us all for the meaning of the season with the respect it deserves.
Love and peace!
Susan
