A short description of what Donny Hathaway's song means to me.
I received a note earlier this afternoon that mentioned my choice of default song on my personal webpage. The individual was suprised that I even knew it. Well, another lil tidbit about myself is that I come from a talented family. No, I am not gonna pretend I'm a Jackson or anything, lol. I just have a family that are musically inclined. Except for me. My dad sang and played upright base, my mother actually recorded a few singles in the 50's. She didn't sell any but we all know that's not a real indicator of talent. My mother could sing. For real. I had an aunt that sang Opera. That woman would make you cry when she sang "Ave Maria". Even my kids can sing. I have a 15 yr old what sounds like a dog whistle she hits notes so high.... her voice is starting to change tho and I hope she doesn't lose that. My other daughter is also clear as a bell, she sounds better than a lot of the records she sings along with. My son. Man he sings and raps. I have cousins that have made a living from performing. A few that have done major award shows. I'm the only one that can't play, sing, nothing. But I love music.
I am a fan of Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, Kiri Tekenawa and Audra McDonald. Rascal Flats, Charlie Pride, Ray Charles. I can pretty much put him anywhere.... He sang whatever. Nancy Wilson the jazz singer and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Bonnie Raitt. Kate Bush. I just found Pheobe Snow and put her on my page ( but I had to make Donny my default again because I missed him greeting me when I proof read.) The blues, Jazz, Rock, Metal. I love music. Genre doesn't matter much. I grew up with 33's and 78's. The ones with the colored wax. As exposed as I was to music, there's no way I could have missed one of the most soulful and moving voices of all times. Donny wasn't just played at out house, he was experienced. As was all the music we enjoyed. The house had great acoustics. Dad put the insulation in himself. But Donny Hathaway was special. No.. Exceptional. Very few voices could have done what Donny's did on that record player. On a record player. The clarity and depth goes straight to my being as a woman. I don't even know if I could take him on a cd. I'd fall through the floor. I have no talent whatsoever .....except for an ear. I hear things in a song, a lyric, in a voice, that can at times move me so emotionally that I need a moment to collect myself. I have cried at the beauty of human voice, Ella, Minnie, Nina, Joe Williams. The list goes on and on.
That's why this is my favorite Donny Hathaway song. I love it... more than you'll ever know. A true master. A true genious. A true joy to listen to. The lyrics are phenominal. The emotion he has for the woman in that song is ..... is there a word for it? I just pray she's not dumb enough to let that man go. That would be idiocy. That song touches on everything a woman needs a man to be. Not what he just says or thinks he is, but in actuality. Lay lyrics like that on top of a bad set of musicians and and that voice? GLORY! Maybe I just appear to be too young to know about good music. It could be that so many pretend they don't know a thing about anyting other than rump shaking cuts, that makes me seem unusual. That's just a stereotype we project on ourselves and each other. The truth is I'm so in love with that song.... I feel his sincerity, and earnestness, and just a tad bit of "girl, da hell is in your head! you know this so why do I have to repeat myself"? That is a righteous brother. A man to be proud of. A man to respect. A man that has no problem being the provider, protector, nurturer. They are hard to find but not a dying breed. I'm gonna find me a man like that someday. I'm gonna marry a man like that someday. Just like my mother did
