Toni Morrison is undoubtedly one of the top authors in the genre of supernatural fiction. Most people are probably most familiar with Morrison's Pulitzer Prize winning novel 'Beloved' from watching the movie produced by Oprah Winfrey. Although she might be viewed as the godmother of spiritually-based fiction, there are a few lesser known authors that are equally as talented.

One of the first authors I was introduced to during my freshman year in college was Octavia Butler. She holds a prominent spot in the area of writing Science Fiction, however she diverted from that arena to write 'Kindred'. It is the story of an interracial couple living in Los Angeles. After moving into a new home the wife, an African American, is mysteriously transported back and forth between modern Los Angeles and the Antebellum South. This engrossing story will leave you wanting for more as you explore the relationship that develops between the woman and a young boy who is the slave master's son.

Another fantastic author who is able to capture the presence of the spiritual woman in the palm of hand is Gloria Naylor. 'Mama Day' is story that is similar to Kindred because the story takes place in alternating locations similtaneously. The story opens in New York City where the niece of Mama Day has moved to escape the mundane life found in her small town. We later discover that life in Willow Springs is anything but mundane as the interesting cast of characters whip up their old time root magic and conjure up some unexpected situations that run deeper than the roots of an old tree.

One of the newest authors to enter this genre is Tina McElroy Ansa. Although Ansa has written a series of books such as Baby of the Family and Ugly Ways, my personal favorite is 'The Hand I Fan With'. A supernatural love story that describes the intense love affair that develops between the main character and a man who came into her life at a time when she needed him the most. Ansa spends a lot time describing every little detail throughout the book, but the characters are well developed and they are unforgettable. The Hand I Fan With will leave you aching for a lover as attentive and fulfilling as the spirit who goes by the name of Herman, featured in this book.

The last three books are non-fiction reference books. 'Sacred Woman : A Guide to Healing the Feminine Body, Mind, and Spirit' offers recipes and advice that will help you discover your center and align your life's purpose on a higher spiritual vibration. 'Sacred Pampering Principles : An African-American Woman's Guide to Self-care and Inner Renewal' is a guide that will show you how to move towards reaching your highest potential and rediscover the sacred power already existing within you.

Finally, 'ONE DAY MY SOUL JUST OPENED UP : 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS TOWARD SPIRITUAL STRENGTH AND PERSONAL GROWTH' is an inspirational devotional that will allow you to journal your progress. You are now set to enjoy your journey to becoming the Sacred Woman that you are already are.
