Thoughts about what is temporal.
Attempting to understand, truly understand other people is hilarious in its futility. How are we to understand others when we run into invisible walls every time we try to understand ourselves? Fear of commitment quickly turns into fear of abandonment, and rules etched into stone lose their relevance, becoming in moments nothing but relics of a long-forgotten past.
Anatta anicca dukkha; anatta anicca dukkha. Repeat it to yourself a thousand times, then ask yourself – can you let go?
Can you distance yourself from happiness enough to live with it closely by your side without grasping, living with the knowledge that in every moment and every second of the day it can disappear? Oh, the lies we tell ourselves. Loss comes in a lovely disguise, a fresh flower, its petals closed. And with every day, as it opens a little bit more, we enjoy the beauty, wanting it to reach its full potential. And then it does. And as it opens fully, pain moves from it into your soul. You’re helpless as you watch the flower wilting. You will be left bereft.
Anatta anicca dukkha; anatta anicca dukkha. Repeat it to yourself a thousand times, then ask yourself – can you let go?
I cannot. And as time goes by, I will forget the threat of pain. But it will not forget me. One day we’ll meet again, this familiar and I. Perhaps we will unite again in a silence so great it is suffocating. Perhaps just this once it will let me go, and as we go our separate ways, I’ll know my time has finally come.
