The on going experiments with medical cannabis use in a controlled environment for terminally and chronically ill people has brought questions and answer in the debate for better communication and understanding between the client and the providers of health care . In a survey made in 2015 by the National Drug Strategy the Australian public are in favour of the use of cannabis as a medicine. The NSW Government has shown its support by introducing a terminal Illness Cannabis Scheme in 2015 that is now been renamed the Medicinal Cannabis Compassionate Use Scheme which is intended to extend compassion to adults with a terminal illness
There are little facts about the implications of using medical cannabis as an alternative to using prescribed medications to assist terminally ill or those with chronic illnesses . Most theories suggest that the effects of cannabis use could be related to as drug abuse and addiction. After doing a little research I read through studies being made by Sydney University who made some experiments that resulted in having different responses between people who used medical cannabis and others who use street cannabis socially . I myself spoke with four people who have used and still use medical cannabis to assist them with their everyday life.
Living with multiple sclerosis and paraplegia is very challenging in many aspects and they stated that using medical cannabis provided them with positive and comfortable results with their psychiatric and physical conditions in their every day lives .
The use of medical cannabis within clinical settings in the USA have found evidence that by using medical cannabis some restoration of short term memory loss has been achieved with patients who have dementia .
The general understanding is that when it comes to alleviating the suffering of terminally ill people and those who are chronically ill , they should have no restrictions to the administration of medical cannabis and an implemented program should be introduced to assist terminally ill people to have pain relief and a quality of care to enable them by whatever means to have a pain free existence .
Is it possible that government guidelines and regulations could be set out to allow the use of medical cannabis easily accessible in an international platform where the population of the world would be able to have medical cannabis relief for the benefit of all who need it .
I believe that God created this plant to be uses in its natural form for such a purpose and if the only the world health organization would support the use of medical cannabis for everyone in need who suffer mentally of physically there could be a new Charter of Healthcare Rights for the future that would cannabis the right to be received in a safe environment and of a high quality where care could be provided in an effective continuum .
The future in providing the best possible care for those with complex needs is the challenge for government and health care providers . New regulations and guidelines have been introduced under the Governments compassionate use scheme to make cannabis use for the terminally ill more acceptable by the police . A new understanding is being introduced to health care providers and carers to be more positive in a holistic approach to assessments and diagnosing care plans for the terminally ill . In addition better nursing interventions can bring about the best possible outcome for the patient . With the complexity of care acceptance of providing solutions for those needs can be a challenge that often require a change of thinking, using strategies that bring a progression to how things had previously been practiced . One of these strategies currently being used in pain relief for the terminally ill is medical cannabis . It has been proven that medical cannabis can actively participate in relaxing the mind and body as well as providing temporary pain relief in some cases . Recent proposals by the health care system have suggested that cannabis could be used for those undergoing chemo therapy .
This intervention would bring change and insight for many .
What makes me accept medical cannabis use is being able to identify the complex needs of those who have an incurable condition . The use of the drug is safe as studies show there has never been a fatal overdose with cannabis alone .
For those people to have an assurance of safety in their own or clinical environment that would be the greatest benefit with tolerating and managing the pain they are in . I am of the opinion that the effects of cannabis use on individuals would alleviate chronic pain with terminally ill and assist the daily needs of those with conditions that cause discomfort and isolation from a health care system unable to accommodate their need . It is time for the health care system to begin a public awareness campaign in order to bring change to where health care in the future is heading ,
Ignorance is the price of an educational and today there is a growing need to learn about alternative methods in health care delivery . Its a step ahead through the wilderness instead of lingering in the same place with no direction .
Thank you for outlining the debate very well. I have long heard that marijuana can be used for pain for those of us with spinal cord injury. Here in Texas, the Center for Texans with Disability is lobbying heavily for the use of medical marijuana.
I am quadriplegic and have continual pain at about the level of 1 or 2. Occasionally, I get aggravating irritating pain that can keep me awake at night and spasms on the equivalent of an athlete's Charlie horse, reaching the level of 8. But when I asked my rehabilitation doctor at a renowned rehabilitation Institute, he simply scoffed at the idea.
When I worked with master degree and doctoral degree students and faculty who used marijuana socially, I found that their ideas unoriginal and rather dull, unresearched and repetitive. As though their creativity and ideation was curtailed in some way.
A recent 20 year study has found that long use of marijuana leads to organ failure and early dementia.
But for palliative purposes for those with very severe chronic pain, any medicine that will help them under a doctor's supervision, is welcome in my mind. When the time comes for me, I will want the strongest medicine there is to keep me from crying out in pain before I die.
