Sooner or later, one of Israel's enemies will achieve a breakthrough. It is only a matter of time until weapons of mass destruction are used against it.
Since 1947, Israel has used military power to keep its neighbors at bay. In strictly military terms this has been a successful policy. In political terms, it has been the equivalent of shoveling muck against the tide. After over sixty years, the enemies are still there and getting stronger.
During the war with Hesb0iiah, the Israeli army was brought to a standstill by a non-government armed force. This pivotal event changed the strategic equation in the Middle East and gave hope to such organizations as Hamas.
Now, once again, the IDF has launched an operation it can't win and will make matters worse. Before the Israeli assault, Hamas was a discredited organization with rapidly dwindling popularity. The invasion of Gaza changed that. Israel is demonstrating once again that its policy is that of eternal war. At least that is what is thought on the Arab street.
The net achievement in operations where most of the victims are civilians is to increase the number of people willing to die for the cause of destroying Israel.
With time, these people will succeed.
There can't be any doubt that there are people seriously motivated to develop weapons of mass destruction that could be used with devastating effect against densely populated targets in Israel. It is only a matter of time until a chemical, biological or nuclear breakthrough is made.
Can this be prevented? Yes!
The whole concept of defense must be changed.
The more Arabs living in Israel, the less are the chances of an ABC attack.
If Israel deployed charities like Hamas and Hesbollah in the West Bank and Gaza, made investments, provided technology to Palestinians, took action to improve the lives of Palestinians, it would gain friends an allies among the Arabs.
Does this sound utopic?
It isn't really, look what happened with Fatah. The majority of Palestinians want peace, a life with dignity and treated as equal human beings. Those are the people Israel must support, not alienate.
