The author discusses Focus on Others, Self Esteem and The Power of Expectations. Hissong presents keys for our dealings with others. Key 4 Understanding Others teaches an oft overlooked concept: rather than criticizing others try to discover what is causing them to behave as they are. How We Make Others Feel and How Others Make Us Feel deal with the age old problems of interpersonal reactions. Communication is dealt with next. Listening, Asking Questions and Non-Verbal Communication are all addressed. Part three, Lagniappe provides insights into Luck, Giving Back and Purpose address the importance of focus in our lives. The book is finished off with a list of references and a twelve point table Keys to Effective Interpersonal Relationships. Writer Hissong brings years of practical ‘on the job’ experience to his writing. Hissong sat through his share of boring meetings, watched as eager beginners lost their enthusiasm and determined there must be a better way to communicate and interact in the workplace, at home and in social setting. Positive Impacts is a potent book sure to prove helpful to those who hope to improve their own communication and or interpersonal skills whatever the setting in which they find themselves. Writer Hissong has a nice ‘folksy’ writing style which he puts to good use covering a medley of topics emphasizing the significance of good communication skills in all areas of life. The reader is not at a loss, nor compelled to search out obscure academia words as they read. Hissong’s straight forward presentation of material is a real plus. Positive Impacts presents keys for attaining success while boosting work performance and self esteem. Hissong uses well-known terminology, anecdotes taken from his own experience, and understandable language to explain topics and craft an easy to read, easy to understand guide for those who feel a lack in their own abilities. I particularly like the notion that we need to focus on others. Positive Impacts is a Premium guide for those involved in a people job where work place relationships are a major facet of the work. As our society moves into becoming more of an information gathering, imparting and storing entity it is not enough to only know information well. Positive Impacts is a must have for those involved in HR, teaching, delivering presentations, ministers and other church workers, as well as those who feel their communication skills can use a touch up.
