Another great review of the kind of child adventure book that I enjoy. Reality can be much more exciting than fantasy it presented well.
As I read, I remembered my mother's childhood memories of the tornado of '33 and my own recollection of the blizzard of '52 when I was in grade school. I also remember when my cousins told me about boarding their teacher (nearly a teenager) for their one room schoolhouse. Both of my grandmothers were schoolmarms with only eighth-grade educations but taught in one-room school houses. I recall getting a letter from my cousin who told me that he hadn't written a letter in 30 years. That letter was perfectly written and confirmed how good education from those one-room school houses with a single teacher for eight grades really was.
