Cats in My Comfrey Highly Recommended
Aunt Jenny sets out for her garden where she finds an array of birds and usual garden type critters.
She is surprised to find three newcomers. The playful kittens who have come to the garden are typical little cats.
Cats in My Comfrey is a delightful book filled with Susan Griebel’s exquisite illustrations is sure to delight children, parents and teachers alike. Writer Aunt Jenny presents a marvelous little tale told in rhyme…… a sure fire winner for the younger set. I found the little tale to be a pleasure.
Cats in My Comfrey is a book I would be happy to use were I still in the classroom. Children are particularly fond of rhyming words. The illustrations lend themselves to much ‘chit chat’ as the story progresses. This is an offering for the younger set. Note: after first writing this review several years ago; I did return to the classroom. Cats in My Comfrey was an eBook available for reading. However, due to the amount preamble before the story itself it was difficult to persuade children to turn pages until they actually reached the story.
Cats in My Comfrey is a read to for the 2 – 5 set, read with some help for the advanced 5-7s. A word list of vocabulary presented placed at the end of the book would be an aid for both teachers and parents.
I would suggest a minor change: Put that author/illustrator information at the end of the book rather than the beginning. The target audience of Young Children cannot read nor do they care to hear read the autobiographical material presented before the tale.
During my twenty plus years in the classroom few if any print books I used presented any information re the author or the illustrator other than the name.
As a parent and teacher I like to know a little about the author and the illustrator. Children do not
Children have low frustration levels. The pages move slowly because of the illustrations, that coupled with having to wade through pictures of women they don’t know and words they cannot read may cause the young reader to give up in frustration before they get to the wonderful book meant just for them.
