Griselda the Great and Tornado Man are a crime-fighting duo. The pair have been said duo for some six months now and their notoriety is growing. Tornado Man, Monosmith is a cigarette smoking, airplane hating, tongue in cheek detective. Griselda, seer, holder of seances and wisdom beyond the norm has once again summoned Monosmith. This time he is to attend the death chamber execution of one Darrel Wayne Smithe. Smithe was convicted of killing six year old Tyler Harbuckle over a decade ago. Dol, Dolinda O’Shea, terrible driver, Harbuckle employee, has been sent to fetch Monosmith from the airport. The death scene plays out pretty much as expected. The dead child’s father is in attendance as are the murderer’s mother and two sisters. Monosmith goes to Harbuckle mansion to reassure the superstitious Ariadne Harbuckle, mother of young Tyler, that no haunting spirits were seen in the death chamber following the execution. Before long Daniel Harbuckle, Ari’s husband lies dead and Tornado Man is in jail. Griselda must work a bit of her magic, or perhaps it is chicanery to point the police to the actual murderer and retrieve her right hand man from the jail cell where he languished for more than a week. Told in the first person writer Shoonover presents A Sense of Endless Woes A ‘Tornado Man’ Impossible Mystery as a divertissement, tongue in cheek look at wealth, artifice, machination, sweet revenge and trickery. Reminiscent of the just plain festivity found in the books offered by Walker Joe Jackson in his PI Harry Walker series author Shoonover’s Tornado Man is an enjoyable read not meant to anything more than entertain the reader. And entertain this narrative does. Shoonover pulls off first person to perfection, and that is not an easy feat. The story line itself is one the reader is sure they have seen on the evening news. Griselda and Monosmith are a delight, I hope there will be more in a series featuring the pair. Filled with archetype, piquant dialogue, enough twists and turns to spin the head of the most careful reader A Sense of Endless Woes A ‘Tornado Man’ Impossible Mystery is a marvelously fun romp for a lazy afternoon spent in front of winter fireplace.
