ASC’S CHILDHOOD SIGHTING
In 1933, I was six and a half years old, and we lived in an isolated forested area on rugged Brushy Mountain, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. I and my seven-year-old friend had a very vivid and real experience with a Bigfoot or some other very large and unfamiliar creature.
As was our habit, we took to the woods in search of hickory nuts. The afternoon was quiet, warm and leaves gently fell, carpeting the ground. We carefully and slowly fought our way through the underbrush to a hickory tree about two hundred yards from my house. While we brushed the leaves from the hidden nuts, low guttural sounds came from behind a very large log laying on the ground about fifty feet from us.
“We looked and saw that a very large hairy ape-like creature about seven or eight feet tall had risen up on his (her?) hind legs with extra long front legs (arms?) hanging down. Without any further observation or any discussion, we high-tailed it out of there immediately. We may have set some type of speed record for our age as we made some new short cut paths through the underbrush in our frightened dash to reach the safety of our house.…We burst through the front door with torn clothing, out of breath, and minor bleeding from the scratches resulting from our crashing through the underbrush.
“As far as I know, the creature did not attempt to chase or follow us.… We told my mom what we had seen. We finally convinced her that we may have actually seen something other than a farm or ranch animal. However, she told us that it was probably a bear or a big monkey that had escaped from its cage while being transported with a circus on a train. … my mom went with me the next day to see the big log where my friend and I had seen the big creature with brownish hair or fur. The only indication we found that some creature had been there was … the leaves in a large area right against the big log were mashed down …”
My dad’s explanation to our story was that we were letting our imaginations run wild. “What do you think? Did my friend and I see Bigfoot?”
