On July 7, 2008 I had to take our other Boston terrier to the vet to have him put to sleep. We thought that we may have to, because since mid-March he had been on steroids for a disc problem in his back. Boston's are kind of hyper and want to touch you as much as possible when you are sitting down. At first we were supposed to keep him on bed rest. That is not easy when you are human, but when you are a dog that is closed to impossible. Finally he was starting to get it, but it was a little too late. On the fourth we came home around 3:00P.M. and he was his usual self, so glad to see us. I fed him and noticed he didn't sound good while eating or drinking. He was having a harder time breathing. The vet had said that he might develop problems with his heart if we couldn't get him to stay calm and had to leave him on the pills. He was doing better, but it wasn't good enough. My husband slept on the floor with him Saturday and Sunday night. We knew I would have to take him Monday morning, I just prayed he would not get too bad over the weekend. On Monday morning I came out and he met me wagging his tail like usual only he was gasping for air. He just didn't have his mouth open. It was 6:30A.M. I hurried and got ready, so I could take him as soon as they opened. I called at 8:00 and they couldn't get him in until 10:45 if I was going to stay with him. I was afraid he might not make it until then so I decided to leave him and come home. I would have never left him if he had not liked to go to the vet. He loved to go to the vets office, he loved the doctor, the girls, and all of the other dogs he would see there.

A Farewell to M&M

I placed the call for information about them about noon that day.  When I called he had four females and I think two males.  I told the man I wanted a female so we went to see them that evening.  By the time we got there we had one of each to choose from.  He was just too cute at three days old, and we chose him.
He was colored like a Boston usually is with the white chest, and four white paws.  M&M had a perfect tail though.  Some Bostons have tails that look as though they have been in an accident. His even tucked under a little. He was a cutie.

We would go and visit every other Saturday so that when it was time to bring him home he would know all of us especially my son. He would run to the cage door when we would go and see him.
My son had a little gold bone made for his cute red collar that had M&M engraved on it.  He picked his name out the first day that we went so he would always know his name.  We went to pick him up and he ran for the cage door when he heard Kraigh call him.  When we got home our son put his red collar on with the little gold bone dangling from it. He was so little he looked like he could hardly hold his head up from that bone hanging from his collar. He was the cutest puppy.
He was a spoiled little boy.  He always listened except when he was about two months old.  He would wait and go in his crate at about 1:30A.M.  I would have to get up and clean him and his crate with baby wipes. Do you know how many wipes it takes to get white paws and pink toes clean.  Alot of them! That happened every night until finally my son convinced me to let M&M sleep with him.  That was what he wanted, and he never made a mess in his crate again.
He grew up looking like a calendar dog.  He was much prettier than most Bostons you see on television.  He would sit so good for a bone and he would speak for one too, but we didn't give him as many as he wanted, because he could never get enough bones. Whenever my husband would eat he would plant himself on one side and sit and watch him take every bite. Apparently he could taste with his eyes, because his mouth would water just watching my husband. I wanted to buy him a cheeseburger before we went to the vet, but he couldn't breathe well enough.
We had an understanding that he was a man's dog when the guys were here.  He always had to lick them and let them kiss him, but always tried to get away when I would try it. When the guys were not here he would try to untie my shoes in the afternoon when I was sitting in my chair, just to bug me.
I have had 14 dogs since I was three years old and most have lived thirteen years, unless killed by cars or freak accidents.  I can hardly believe that we have lost two dogs in two weeks and four days time.  Mackie was only going to be six years old.  Today would have been her birthday, and M&M was only eight and a half years old.
We pulled up in front of the vets office. I kissed him on the head and said, " I love you baby boy".  I picked him up and put him down.  He wagged his tail at everyone he saw there.
They know now that they need to put us in a room by ourselves right away, because I don't think I'm too good for their business the way I go in there.  Someone will say Hi to the dog and I start to cry.  They even have to put a box of kleenex in the room when I show up.
She came in the room and I signed the papers and paid the bill.  She said come on M&M and he wagged his tail and never looked back.  He couldn't wait to go with her. I said, "Bye Sweetie" and left. I hated to leave him, but at least it would take his mind off of not being able to breathe so well.
You couldn't ask for a better dog. So this a tribute to one of the best dogs I'v ever had! Bye Choppies give your sister a kiss for me. I Love You!!

My heart goes out to you.
Having to put a family member and possibly your best friend down is one of the hardest things any lover of dogs has to do.
