How to treat sciatica

I have severe pain in my back and down my leg is this sciatica?

Sciatica pain t radiates from your lumbar spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the classic sign of sciatica. You might also have discomfort anywhere along the nerve pathway, but it's especially likely to follow a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain.  Maybe even shock like symptoms. It can worsen when you cough or sneeze, as well as prolonged sitting can aggravate symptoms. Usually only one lower extremity is affected.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body.  This nerve can runs down the back of each leg.  If this nerve gets pinched or irritated it can cause severe pain down your leg into your calf. There are many possible causes of sciatica, such as Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, Trigger points, Piriformis syndrome, and Spinal disc herniation

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

Is when  spinal bone puts pressure on the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spinal cord. The result can be an intense pain shooting down either or both legs. As well as unhealthy postural habits, such as excessive time sitting in chairs, and sleeping in the bad position

Trigger points

Another source of sciatic symptoms, active trigger points(muscle knots) of the lower back and the gluteus muscles causing pressure on the surrounding tissue. In this case, the pain is not due to compression of the sciatic nerve, but trriger points causing pain distribution down the buttocks and leg.

Piriformis syndrome

There are 2 possible paths of the sciatic nerve one the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle and the second path is beneath the piriformis muscle. When the muscle has a spasms or trauma, it can compress or strangle the sciatic nerve beneath the muscle. This may be the major cause of sciatica when the nerve root is normal, Many people believe that this is a large cause of sciatic pain that is commonly mis diagnosed.

Spinal disc herniation

When the discs are compressed by the vertebrae, they cause the nerve root pressure, causing pain in the back and down the leg.

In years past, the treatment has involved painful injections, pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, and even surgery. Through chiropractic, care we use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures. These chiropractic adjustments can be quite effective in reducing nerve irritation and its associated pain. Sciatica can be traced to the spine.  Most sciatica responds successfully to the restoration of normal spinal function through conservative chiropractic care and thus removal of pain.
