A great idea that worked well, especially for the Apollo program to the moon. Government contracts to thousands of businesses across the country created a kind of innovative boom that has been rather lost in recent years, especially with the two Space Shuttle tragedies. The edge of competition with the superpower, the Soviet Union is gone. There is a greater reliance on private enterprise to take on the whole design and execution like Space X has with their mission to Mars.
NASA reaching the ripe old age of 60, reminds me of when I tried to join the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston with a fresh Masters degree in biotechnology (human factors engineering) from Stanford when NASA was 10. I found that the Apollo program was winding down and aerospace jobs were unavailable. Had to settle for a quality control job in telecommunications.
