This book gives us a perfect example of love gone wrong. It is about a dysfunctional family full of drama, tears, fears and lessons. What is a dysfunctional family? Wiki says, "A dysfunctional family is one in conflict where emotional or physical abuse occurs continually and regularly."
Story facts:
Anna, the wife, mother and matriarch needed a house to feel secure. Edward needed her. It was a dangerous thing to try and reform Edward or Anna, suffering in my opinion from depression, co-dependency and loving too much. Both made mistakes as did their children who were now grown. The main conflict in the story was whether or not to sell the House they lived in for 30 years. I believe Edward thought if he kept the House from being sold, he could keep his family together. Anna disagreed. She wanted to sell the house and break free from the past that held them all prisoners. It is not their love for each other that worried me; it was their over-all unconcern for each other's feelings.
The story began with Edward and Anna getting a divorce. As happens with children of divorce, all were taking sides. Before the signed divorce papers could be filed in the Courts, Anna, the keeper of the fires and neglected wife, discovered by accident that her 56-year old, womanizing husband was dying from cancer. He had three to six months to live. What should she do?
Death and dying was discussed a lot about under the circumstances and I liked that Anjuelle quoted Ghana saying, "Death needs a strong heart. The goat says, nobody willingly walks to his own death." Death does not sound a trumpet. When death holds something in its grip, life cannot take it way. Death is one ditch you cannot jump. Whatever you love, death also loves. Lie down and die. You will see who really loves you." While it seemed as some parts of Anna were dying, she still needed to be appreciated, needed and loved and she had a hard time giving up the idea of escaping to France with her new love, Inman. She had taken up with him during their year and a half separation. The stage was set.
As happens with estranged marriage partners, we sometimes turn to others for comfort and lovemaking easier than each other. There were many fleeting moments of love making in this story I enjoyed. Anjuelle wrote with the kind of passion only a woman can, "Inman, touched his forefinger to her lips. Slowly she closed her eyes. He moved his lips to her stomach, abdomen, and womanhood. Anna lost tract of her anger and vulnerability. She relaxed her head into the pillow. Inman eased his body on top of hers. The feel of his skin against her chest, as on so many occasions during the last six months, enlivened spaces left long dead by Edward's absence...Inman merged his body with hers. Slowly, carefully he entered the temple of her repose. Love, complete and pure, engulfed Anna."
Anjuelle wrote short, sweet chapters moving the scenes along very quickly for Edward, Anna and her children. She wrote that the "House" was Anna's mainstay, her heaven on earth encased by the hell of her marriage. This is true for so many women caught up in bad marriages. Anjuelle was very good at descriptions like slivers of morning sunlight pierced the window shade. The well formed characters all lived with blame, dysfunction and paranoia. I don't want to give the story away but it was suspenseful and true to form. We are all created with the ability to love, hate and make mistakes in relationships. The House was a good title for this book. I would definitely recommend this book for all families. It was smooth and easy reading. Five Stars Anjuelle and for Amazon when it hits the shelves.
