"Oh, that you would hear Him calling you today and come to Him." -Psalms 95:6
Do you remember the little drummer boy when he beat his drum and sang, "I have no gift to bring parum-pum-pum-pum, to lay before the king parum-pum-pum-pum?" He had been asked to come visit the King of kings, baby Jesus. And while others had fine gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh, the little drummer boy had nothing more than himself and his drum. As it turned out, that’s all that was needed to honor the King.
I was reminded of this story not long ago when our pastor’s sister came to visit our church to share a message with us for the first time. She was an absolute doll, as she stood excitedly before the congregation, willing to share a word of encouragement. She began by humorously sharing bits and pieces about family members and friends. And just when we thought the message would be light and airy she dropped a bomb. With tears of compassion in her eyes she asked one simple question.
"What will you give the King?"
My heart was pricked to the core as I contemplated what I could possibly give God in return for the gift of His son Jesus Christ who died for me? Suddenly, I found myself much like the down cast drummer boy, beating my hand made drum while singing silently, "I have no gift to bring, to lay before my king."
In my attempts to further Gods kingdom, I write, I witness, I pray, I give, I read, and I share with others. All being fine deeds, I know none of them are gifts worthy to lay before the King. Like the little drummer boy, the only gift God really wants me to bring before Him, is me. The occasional very good, well behaved, spiritual acting me. And the all too often rotten, stinky attitude, not so spiritual, grumble face me.
God wants me as His gift, just as I am. And He wants you too.
Nothing will honor God more then when we lay ourselves down at his feet and earnestly say, "I have only myself to bring, to lay before You my King."
Give the King of kings the most perfect gift this New Year—give Him the gift of you.
