One of the first things you can do for yourself is to try to schedule radio interviews. Now, I know there are tons of online radio spots, and pod casts, but you might consider contacting your local stations, and ask them if they interview authors.
One of the places you might try would be any college that might have their own radio station. This can be beneficial because many listen in. It can be limited as far as audience, but what you want is more local exposure.
This can really create a good following, as well as generate sales on a local level. This is also a way to gain more book signings in your area.
For my first interview, I was able to gain book signings in two different stores. Some of the radio stations have bookstore sponsors, and this gives you a wonderful venue to sell books.
One thing I recommend is that you schedule far in advance for the interview, and try to make sure you have at least one book signing immediately following it.
With the radio station I scheduled with, I made sure I had at least nine weeks to prepare.
The host wanted a hard copy of my book, so make sure your book is published before you venture into this type of publicity.
Also, listen to an interview prior to your scheduled date. Your host may want you to generate questions/talking points, so he/she can prepare for the interview.
With the advance, the papers can also review your book. Don’t send a hard copy until the newspaper asks for one. You might be spinning your wheels otherwise.
Most newspapers will announce your interview/book signing, so make sure you send them your PSA (Public Service Announcement/Press Release) well in advance.
I hope this helps anyone who is trying to promote his/her book.!
