As a parent, what are the most important lessons you can teach your child?
Children learn lessons in many ways. They observe and see more than we realize. They learn from the words they hear and from the actions they see. They learn from their parents, from their friends and from everyone with whom they come in contact. Ideally, we want our children to be self confident, law abiding and loving individuals. We want them to care for others and respect everyone. We want them to treat everyone equally, not the rich better than the poor and not the influential better than the average citizen. That is why I have written my children's books. They have been produced for my grandchildren so that they may learn some of these important lessons. Everyone 's grandchild can learn lessons from my books. Pizza Pete is the story about a pigeon who is too fat to fly. The children entice the bird into a home made dome by sprinkling bird seed right up to and into the dome. They then take it home, put it on a nutritious diet and witness the transition as Pizza Pete returns to health. They treat the bird with love and respect and find it so difficult to let go when Pete is ready to take flight. In this story, the children learn how sacrifice is part of love and how inside each one of us, there is the person that we can be. The story is written in rhyme with a lilting verse because children love rhyme and they love music. Billy Bluejay is the story of bullying and what we can do about it. The bluejay is the backyard bully. He frightens the other birds away until they learn by talking with their parents if they ignore his squawking and stay away from him, they could possibly effect a change. It works. Milly Mockingbird, soon to be published, illustrates how each one of us has a very special voice and once we find it and use it,we become more self confident individuals. We don't have to copy others. We only need to follow our own voice. A well illustrated book is a beautiful way to teach your child a life-long lesson.
