 What Happened to Us?

[thoughts of   ~a burning woman~   Sha’Tara]

If we read at all, or remember some of our basic teachings we know a little about time, change, evolution—or what I prefer to call natural adaptation.  We know that observable ‘change’ if we think ‘evolution’ takes millions upon millions of years to appear.  In terms of our own life, the process is meaningless: we won’t see it happen.  I won’t see the neighbor’s Jack Russell terrier sprout claws to climb trees after squirrels, or grow gills to chase the salmon.  We accept this very slow process mostly by not thinking about it.

Interestingly we also accept without question the fact that in a few hundred years we were able to develop a technology that is changing the face of this world forever; perhaps destroying it.  History sketches similar upsurges of ‘civilized’ developments; of city and empire building, during the last, say, 20,000 years—a period which in geological time is less than the blink of an eye.

It appears that we live in two disparate conditions all the time: the ponderous geological adaptation process of change that we can only hypothesize about, and the sudden onslaught of change via thoughts and ideas that coalesce into violent contradictions we are unable to control, guide or stem.  While a few benefit from this upheaval, the vast majority of people, animals and other life become its victims, fuel for its fires.  Much of that change evidences as war: the rush to claim resources (natural and labor) to further the burning madness.

Then, as history shows, just as suddenly as it appeared the change wave peaks, then crashes.  The phenomenon ends.  Floods, winds and sun wash away, bury under mud and sand, or pitilessly bleach the scattered remains of this folly; millions, perhaps billions, die.  Remnants scatter throughout the planet, returning to the lands, the forests, the rivers and the seas to forage in survival mode until they establish their little tribes, their simple uniform little communities, losing touch with other groups.  Life returns to the ponderous normalcy of geological time and creeping adaptation.  Trees and grasses eat the highways; rusting hulks vanish from shorelines.  Life is good.

What happened to ‘us’ in these 20, 30,000 past years?  How did we get ‘here’ from ‘there’ by-passing all the normal channels of change as the rest of life seems to experience it?  Who are we… perhaps better put, “what” are we?

These are the questions I enjoy pressing the Teachers with, and of course they enjoy formulating answers just as much.  The games avatars play.  So I’ve been asking and I’ve been receiving answers.  But it took me a long time to feel confident that I could ‘translate’ their answers into the very restrictive framework of an Earthian language.

But now I have it.  I can ‘paint’ a picture that will make sense.  Keep in mind, always, that this is my picture and no one else need accept what it shows.  Just an explanation put forth where none now exists.  A gap filler.  Using Occam’s razor, that in trying to understand something the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one, let’s draw.

We know that everything is in movement; that ‘groups’—be they universes, galaxies, solar systems and their individual members all move though space.  All have ‘flight paths’ they must follow.  We also know there are wanderers among them who do not seem bound to the same paths.  In other words, there is movement within movement, some groupings passing through others unseen, being made of different ‘stuff’ and some by-passing and remaining unknown.

Imagine that in universal time a ‘group’ of stars passed through ‘here’—where this solar system is now passing.  Imagine that in this group of stars there existed highly advanced civilizations who lived by philosophies and technologies we can only wonder at.  They may be long gone, but since some ‘things’ move at different rates than others, their ideas, their thoughts and philosophies remained long after their worlds took them away.  These remains are found in ‘energy bundles’ that, because they are not matter as we know it, move much slower and remain longer than the things we can sense.

Life, we know, connects everything to everything.  If you have an appliances with the right plug, with the correct voltage, you can plug it into a wall outlet and if there is power there, it will work.  But if your appliance is moving away from the power source eventually you will pull the plug out and be disconnected.  Also if your appliance has a lower voltage rating than the source it will work for a while, amazingly well (!) then simply burn out.

We are mind beings equipped with an electrically controlled appliance we call a ‘body’ and as such, having reached a certain level of geological time adaptation, have become equipped to tap into ‘thought forms’ or ideas and philosophies left behind by a previous intelligence.  Suddenly we find ourselves in a ‘cloud’ of information from which we are able to extract certain ideas we like to think of as our own.  Likely we are tapping only the baser, coarser, aspects of the previous intelligence’s ‘memories’ but it’s enough to throw us into a veritable frenzy of unnatural expressions.  We found the proverbial horn of plenty, the mother lode, the Holy Grail, the fountain of youth, the cosmic candy store!

Mentally evolved enough to subconsciously tap into the surface of a vast reservoir of intelligent information, yet not enough to really understand the ramifications.  Not patient enough to record this treasure in order to study it and see how it could be used to benefit all of life on earth, or determine whether it comes from a race of beings who destroyed themselves with crazy ideas.  Like kids coming upon mountains of candy so vast they can’t see they are in a candy store and the amount is limited and has a shelf-life.  The limited amount of candy passes into the hands of the bullies who proceed to create addictions (false dreams and desires) among the populations so they will be moved to mortgage their very lives to buy this candy from the rich and powerful.

Predictably, as the transaction power increases the bullies proceed to make war on each other to get more and more of the candy.   Meanwhile their entire system is moving through space at a rapid pace, leaving the candy store behind.  Soon there is no more “new” candy.  The wars drag on for a while, then the candy-based power grid collapses.  ‘Dark ages’ set in accompanied by terror and death.  Then nature takes over again… until the next encounter.  Who knows what that will be?

The thing to be aware of when contemplating ‘our’ technological achievements is this:  the technology did not create anything new.  It is a  spoiled child without self-sustaining abilities, totally dependent on its parents; two pre-existing conditions which are, mommy: availability of finite natural resources and daddy: the existence of a ‘cloud’ of alien information that is basically evaporating before our very eyes.  Daddy is leaving and mommy is worn out.  End of life in the technological play pen.

You bring up some interesting prospects Regis. I would agree that in terms of geologic history we are living in a pocket of time that is truly unique. I think what most people fail to realize is that the Earth itself, for much of its history, has been unable to support our form of life. Only a mere 550 million years ago carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are thought to be 7000 parts per million, a far cry from todays levels of roughly 400 (ppm).
So we live/operate/exist in only the narrowest of mental and biological corridors. And eventually, no matter what we think we can do, this very Earth will turn the page. As to our place inside of this framework, I think what you described, for me anyway, could be attributed to what I like to think of as, "the collective consciousness. A form of intelligence that we tap into without knowing or really understanding it. As to the source, I'm just a lowly writer, not a scientist or philosopher.
I don't know if you're right...but I know it is a fascinating prospect, and a stimulating conversation.

Be well and be safe Sir,
Mark

" then the candy-based power grid collapses. ‘Dark ages’ set in accompanied by terror and death. Then nature takes over again… until the next encounter."

We humans have the knack for constantly disrupting the 'system'. Mercifully, mother nature always brings it back to equilibrium. The further we push the pendulum to the right the more it swings back to the left. Probably the rationale of the Buddhist teaching to go the 'middle path' in life.

Thank you for this deeply thought article. Love, Peace and Blessings Reg, my friend.

Sincerely,
Regino

Great piece Regis - very insightful. One might also contemplate the role of what David Suzuki has referred to as the "Runaway brain" that has allowed us to tap all this information and transform - wreak havoc on the planet. Mother nature has a way of putting things right and I do worry that we are long overdue for a major reckoning from nature that will "deal with" human overpopulation and the impact of our runaway brains. Preach it! The candy store closes up shop on a regular basis and leaves us with an empty nipple to suck on. Like babies, a sucky or soother only soothes for a short them, then the war breaks out. Have you seen the documentary, In Debt We Trust Can probably get it from the library.

almost everything we observe or think we know, appears to be in contradiction -- when I reach that conclusion, I quietly begin to sing the lyrics to an old Ed Ames song, "the answer my friend, is blowing in the wind" -- interesting and thought provoking Reg -- there are times in my view when I feel it is comforting to sit back, relax and practice the "k.i.s.s." (keep it simple stupid) theory -- may peace and the light of love guide you to the valley of great joy -- JMW

As I see it, we are a faulty end product that evolution kind of let us squeeze by where all the others ramifications died.

This article just proves the saying of Solomon, "There is nothing new under the sun."

Cycles of birth, life and death occur ad infinitum, or at least until the last cycle is done and entropy takes over. Only the cycle creator knows when that will be, so live life and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Well written article expressing an existential philosophy of thought. Your points are many, and actually a few more than I am able to comprehend in one sitting. Of course this not the writer's fault. Therefore, could you recommend further reading on the subject matter mentioned?

In appreciation,

Rockie Coppolella

PK Dickian--or is it Jared Diamond in conversation with The Higher Beings? At any rate, beautifully argued, and persuasive. We're definitely on the cusp of ... something.

Heavy thoughts here, Regis. It seems mankind has always overestimated what he/she can and/or should do about everything. Too bad history repeats itself constantly and mankind doesn't learn.

Keep in touch and take care.

Sandy
