Note To Self: I Love You
How often do we go out of our way to say I love you to others?
Better yet, how many times do we do things for others to help boost their self-esteem? Do we do the same for ourselves?
I decided to inventory each time I made a negative comment to myself. I was shocked! Why do we engage in self-sabotage? I do not know the answer, but I do know what God's words say about me. I am making a deliberate decision to replace each negative self-talk with a positive verse from the bible. Here we go:
You are a bastard child because your biological dad left before you were born. ~Ephesians 1:5-6 In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will- to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
You are unable to complete tasks correctly. You are stupid.
~ II Timothy1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline.
You are too short. You would look better if you were at least 5 '7'
~ Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
You are just as ugly as your no good for nothing father.( This is what mom often said to me growing up, unfortunately. )
~Romans 8:31-34 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, -how will he not also along with him graciously, give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised to life- is at the right hand of God, and is also is interceding for us.
Finally, I am thankful for so many blessings. I have a wonderful husband and three great children, but one cannot wipe away completely negative childhood memories. I tend to allow these memories to dominate my thinking, especially during this pandemic. I feel so isolated, can't visit my children, can't socialize with friends, so my only option is to make a deliberate decision to replace negative self-talk with bible verses. Transformation is a journey, and only God can walk alongside me to encourage me along.
I had a wonderful childhood. But I progressed from being the first in my family to finish college and then go on to earn a doctorate and work my entire life, not for money but for better for young people and for the planet.
