THE S-THEORY OF TIME by Joel Sattler
To the point:
There is no separation between past, present and future.
They all exist simultaneously.
Or, rather, only the present exists.
The above statements seem to contradict human understanding, but bear with me.
Now, an overly simplistic review:
The A-Theory of Time :
The past, present and future in a line.
All things have a past, present and future
The B-Theory of Time :
Things relate to each other as earlier or later.
Past, present and future are merely the way we conceptualize these relations.
Professor McTaggart came up with this idea,
And even figured out the inherent contradictions implied.
Plus which, the way we use language interferes
with our understanding of these concepts.
We’re screwed either way.
The very word “time” is a flaw.
The idea of time as a noun as a something creates confusion.
“You can’t step in the same river twice.”
- Heraclitus of Ephesus (Hράκλειτος o Eφέσιος, c. 535–c. 475 BCE)
Actually, Herc, you can’t put the same foot in the river twice either.
Not only that,
but you are the river.
It is impossible to experience a moment in the present.
By the time your brain gets to it,
you’re already in the past.
By the time you understand it,
even further in the past.
And by the time you remember it:
long gone.
But only the present “exists”.
I.e., only is is.
This idea is generally called “Presentism”.
The idea that the past, present and future “exist” is called “Eternalism”
I maintain that they co-exist.
The passage of time is a necessary illusion for us to function within the Bang.
If the past is not what you think it is,
if the present is not what you think it is,
if the future is not what you think it is,
then time is not what you think it is.
And YOU are not WHAT you think you ARE.
Our greatest failing as philosopher beings
is that we believe our explanations are as real as reality.
But our greatest success
is our ability to create models of understanding
with which we can step outside of ourselves and our limits
and have a method by which
we can comprehend things that are way beyond us.
For example,
you can understand the basics of the Theory of Relativity
even if the physics of it are cryptic
and the math is a blur.
So, in the S-theory,
light does not move,
but permeates the universe
and the illusion of time
is simply the relationship of things to light.
Or, instead,
all things are made of light,
but some are lighter than others,
and this has the appearance of creating causality.
Did you, do you, will you
get it?
Not only that,
but no two things,
and no two events,
can exist or occur simultaneously.
So, whether you read this now or later,
didn’t matter,
doesn’t matter,
will not have had mattered.
The mind is not what you think it is.
